Keeping Male And Feale Together

ive seen everyone of my females get stress lines on occasion but never a male. not saying it dont happen but ive never seen it

my current male vt and my male pk have displayed stress stripes, not as prominant as females, and they seem to loose them quicker, but i have seen them on two of my males

lol maybe mine arnt stressed ever then :)
dont see what they have to be stressed about anyways they get to swinm around in nice big tanks and are fed good food.
didnt realise they showed lines is all

perhaps is a defence thing, they cant show any weakness of they will never hold a territory againt other males, so their boddied are better equiped to cope with stress and show less symptoms, and for a shorter period. lol, yet another theory

i too have kept a pair together no problem, they were very attached to each other, always together then the female died of white spot and the male was lost without his friend, think thats why he died  i had a strong current in that tank along with guppies and platies

Just a thought.....

If your bettas died it deffinatly was not a "sucess" or without any problems. The female was stressed so baldy she died of ick? Ick is the easiest thing to cure. Usually takes 1-2 days at most with any of the treatments. The male probably died, not cause he was lonely, but because of stress also. The high current was also another definate factor in the deaths.

Please dont take this the wrong way. I have alot of bettas and i would never recomend keeping them together. Sorry about your bettas im sure you mis them.

Do males build nests to establish territory? If so.. I didn't know that :p heh
I think it all just depends on the bettas.
You could've just gotten lucky and had very laid back bettas. Or maybe they didn't fight for the reasons you stated. Or maybe they were kept together with their siblings for a long time before being seperated so maybe were used to other bettas... who knows heh.
I also wouldn't want to risk keeping males and females together though even if the theory of more surface movement to prevent bubblenest making was found to be true.

Males are going to establish teritory with or without a nest. I have one male that will never/ has never made a nest, but if he ever got the chance i bet he would definatly fight another male in his tank(or female).

Alot of times when people put male and females together and they "look fine" its because they are already sick/unhealthy. This leads them to beleive they are ok because they donot know what signs to look for. Then in a few weeks there here posting "Why did my bettas die? They looked so nice together".

That is an interesting theory I have a 10 gallon divided tank. The one with the most current doesn't seem to flare as much as the other one. They can see shadows on the other side of the plastic canvas divider. When I get a chance to change them around I wonder if it will change the way they act. It will probably have to wait until this weekend.

Bettas have long flowing fins. This makes them prefer no water movement to some or alot. That is why your betta is not flaring as much as the other one.

:good:

well it was a long time ago, 7 years to be exact, it could of been stress as you said i don't remember exaclty but the female never had stress stripes, anyway i keep them seperate now, would never do it again knowing more about them now :good:

I'm with bUcky :good:

Again, not to say it can't happen, just not likely to work indefinately.

I repeat and repeat:

Betta are unpredictable

What is working today can change tomorrow. Just because it is working for a month does not mean it will always work. The ones who argue and do whatever anyway after they have been warned are not the ones who have been keeping lots of Betta for years.

So we just keep repeating from our experience that such and such will not usually work. And just as we learned from our own and others' experiences, it just has to be tried again. Bettas have been kept for hundreds of years. What new will we learn about their behavior today from experimenting and theorizing?
