Yes, when you run the fluidized bed filters, you should have some additional filtration, just in case.

Sorry Gaz, been away for a few days,
I've had noreal problems with the equipment itself apart from having to get a new heater, - when I was doing water changes especially larger ones (20-25%) I wasn't turning the heater off (which sits close to the surface in the internal) - so therefor over time I guess it burnt itself out. Now I have the powerhead and heater on a double socket so they go off together when I do a water change, and so far no problem with the heater.
All the best with it, running the two filters together will be plenty though you'll being doing well to diguise the internal! The person you brought it off obviously thought it was underfiltered or why would they have got the external?
Anyway that said I still run my 400 on just the internal, but have lost a few fish to no obvious reasons, and as said, speaking to others they have suggested that the 400 is underfiltered. I think maybe this thread will spur me on to add an external aswell

The 402 powerhead for the Rio 400 is rated at ca 1000l/hr
don't know what the 'ca' stands for, but I guess it means that this would turn the water over 2.5 times an hour.
Is this a suitable amount of filtration?
Does anyone know what the fluval 404 will do an hour?

NO a tank can never be over filtered..........and the flow rate for a Fluval 404 is 1300 lph (litres per hour), i use one of these my self but be warned!!!!!!!!! the water output flow is very strong in anything less than a 6 foot tank so if you wanna keep plants etc and fish that like slow currents the 404 is not for you! :what:

yeah 404 might be a bit of overkill, the rio 400 is 5'.
I know fish like different flows and plants don't like much at all, but (theres allways a but) what should you aim for ie.
X times volume/hour, say for a planted community set-up?
eg. the 404 only in the Rio 400 would give 3.25 changes an hour.

I will be running the 5x2x2 on 404's so i'll let you know how violent they are in tank of this length, flow rate dont bother me too much cose im housing BIG fish in it with no plants and to me when keeping these kind of fish turnover is the holy grail lol :laugh:
If it aint too bad i'll post and let you know m8 as the 404 is an excellent filter, just not as reliable as the Ehiems thats all but then you gets what you pays for huh? lol 8)

but then you gets what you pays for huh? lol 8) I have a four month old Rio 180 that is *now* fine apart from some hair algae I can't shift.
When I purchased the box, it was deliverd 'as new' except we fille the "annoying" thing up to 3/4 and it leaked... 100+gals of water to empty and mop the lounge. nightmare.
The firm 'Aquacadabra' sent a new one round in a cab and all has been well. I have a UV on the back and standard internal filtration. I do think that I could fit another external and it would help.

Once again everyone, don't forget about head loss when shopping for filters. 1400 litres per hour can quickly drop under a 1000 by the time you get it mounted under a tank.......
