Juwel 180

Sry for my complete ignorance... have been away for a month... What price are you expecting to pay for this tank??? A Juwel Rio180 is around the £200 mark (slightly less in some places) for the tank with new filter/filter media, heater & powerhead supplied.

Oh and make sure you got a unit to withstand the weight...(most of the stands supplied with tanks look cheap and nasty... like it could be bought from MFI or the likes).

Good idea to go fishless.

And one other thing, larger tanks cycle faster than smaller ones :)

What fish do you intend to put into the tank once its cycled?

Its the Juwel 180 curved front tank with stand.... bidding nearly over, looks like i will pay £150, plus extra's she is giving me with it....so not a bad buy i dont think, my brother bought this model brand new, and it cost £380....

Im not sure what fish im going to get, but i currently have a tank with various fish in, and im going to move some of them into the larger tank, my 2 angel fish, 2 clown loaches, and 1 gourami...i intend to get 2 female gouramis for him, but i havnt really thought about what other fish yet..

I am going to keep my platies, and mollies in my exsisting tank, as i think this is big enough for them :D

I was thinking about putting sand into my new tank, what do you think??

So pleased for you  , i would love a tank like that  .

Thanx everyone !!

I cant wait to pick it up, and get it running lol

Im going to do a fishless cycle, should i put ammonia in, or should i put the water in out of my already up and running tank, when i do partial water changes?? and just keep adding it?? I was just thinking it might speed the cycle up, but im a novice...lol...

I was thinking of adding sand to this one, and some lovely slate, and some live plants....

What do you guys think??

I am adding my exsisting 2 clown loaches, 2 angel fish, and 1 gourami, i would like to get 2 female gouramis....and i havnt thought any further about what to add....

ideas would be great, but i DONT want any nasty fish lol

Claire, I thought of doing sand in my tank but i read about having to disturb it to prevent gas build up, seeing I haven't had a tank before I decided to try and keep it simple and went with fine gravel from Pets at Home which is almost sand coloured (albeit called pink marble) which I think looks nice.

Cheers,

Keith

I have sand. It doesn't take much to prod the sand with a stick everytime you do a water change. The loach will appreciate the sand too.

How about a nice shoal of tetras? Glowlights, cardinals, rummy nosed are all nice.

Maybe more loach? maybe different species. Or corys?

Yes i was thinking of some more loaches....

I have 3 bronze cory's already, should i move these to the new tank aswell??

Im undecided about sand or gravel...... I have a syphon hose cleaner for the tank, would i be ok moving the sand around with this? Or would i need more drastic measures?? Nice and simple is what i want lol

My brother is just in the process of taking his gravel out of his juwel 180, and changing it to sand... He has also bought some more rocks etc... So it might mean i can have his slate :D As he doesnt think it will all fit back in his tank  Good for me i suppose lol

Thanx for you help

You are lucky to have won it!!!
Glad you decided to go with sand :) Its easy to use your syphon hose cleaner. Just hover above the sand and swirl it around to pick up the muck. Use a larger grain sand such as playpit or pool sand.

My brother bought a bag of sand from our LFS yesterday, i think he said it was £13, for a big bag..... He only needed to buy 1 bag for his 180 juwel tank....

Not sure what type of sand it is though.... Does it matter??

Sand is sand, only two differences i can think of, colour and finesness (ie. coarse or fine sand)... your corys will prefer sand, however loaches seem to prefer fine gravel as they love digging...

I think the fine aqua gravel you can buy is somewhere in between and is what i use in all my tanks.

As for fish if your going to get some pretty fish get some Cardinals. Gold & Red ones look beautiful together, i have a group of 17 in my big tank (12 reds and 5 golds) and i think they look great together.

And if you like loaches get yourself a Blue Loach, powder blueish grey in colour with orange fins, i have one and hes looks great, gets on with my clown loach well too (although they can squabble at feeding time as they are both pretty greedy fish)

One more thing, your filter housing will probably have a space at the bottom, if possible id reccomend at least filling that part up with sand/gravel (pref gravel as its not easy to dig away once youve clogged up the space) otherwise youll find that some loaches and some cats (not corys) will hide in their forever and a day, its also a trap for collecting (hate to say it) bodies of dead fish, they can go un-noticed for a while if there stuck under the filter housing.

Oooooooooooh thanx alot !!!

I am pleased to say, i have brought my new tank home this evening :D I am still debating whether to go for sand or fine gravel, i have just been to my brothers, and he has changed his to sand today, and it looks much darker than i thought it would, but its still very nice....so i will have a look at the fine gravel too....

The tank is great, i am going to fill it up on sunday i think, once i have decided on sand/gravel, i have my ornaments already, some slate, and a slate bridge...really nice, cost my brother £50 as he has got new stuff for his tank today, he has sold me these for £20, so i am dropping on bargains all round, as the juwel only cost me £150, its absolutely great too, in excellent condition...cant believe my luck !!!

I need to get some tubing for my air bubble thingy not sure what its called, that u can have in there, and the pump that goes with it...

Once i have this on sunday, i will set up the tank, and let it cycle without fish....

I think im going to add a couple more loach dont know which kind...do all species get along ok? I have 2 clown loach already...

And i want 2 female gouramis for my dwarf male..( i think) lol

Thanx Claire xx

If you use this method you will still need to prod. The problem with sand is that it compacts. So just swirling around won't release any gas bubbles deep inside.

Depending on the sand and speed at which the water is syphoned out you may be able to use it as you would on gravel. I tried it and only a bit of sand was syphoned out and I just put it back in. But if you get plants then you cant really do that anyway, so your back to prodding!! Honest though its not much work. Get a chop stick or similar.

If the sand is darker than you thought then I'm guessing it's more like the sand I have which is playsand. You can get playsand from B&Q etc at a reasonable price. But £13 sounds good to me, esp from a LFS. You can get white sand, but I'd guess this is more expensive.

I thought you could other loaches, but I'm not sure. best ask in the right forum. I have botia striata (in my avatar). They are supposedly one of the more peaceful botia, I haven't had problems in the 6 months I've had them.

i really found sand hard to get on with so changed to a fine gravel which i find alot easier for hoovering etc....

like keith said pets at home do some nice fine gravel in different colours (natural or un-natural) i have fine slate so it looks pretty natural
