tis a sad day for me :(

am seriously thinking of saying goodbye oscars unless i can come up with a plan.

they have fought horrendously over the weekend yet show now battle wounds.
on another oscar site they say it could still be mating, or one showing the other whos boss (as they are not actually 'harming' each other) but it is just so heartbreaking to watch. Waldorf grabs Statler by the lips, throws him round the tank, pushes him in the corner and shakes at him. poor thing must be petrified.
tried dividing the tank but the crayfish and catfish are going looney at not having the 'floor' space to play on (half on one side half on the other)

and for 90% of the time the oscars are fine together, its just for that hour in the evening all hell breaks lose. they look so sad seperated :(

i dont know what to do. i cant get rid of one, i couldnt choose who to go. id have to say goodbye to both.

i just cant watch them fighting like that and it scares my kids terribly. they come screaming 'hes killing him mama!!!!!!

what do i do peeps, come on. give me an idea.

Oh honey, I dont know what else to suggest apart from the seperating. Trouble is if you re-home them together then the aggression will continue with whomever they are with. As heartbreaking as it may be to seperate them, I think in the long run it will be for the best. Take a vote in the household as to which everyone would like to keep and go with the majority.

Im sure the kids would rather have one than watch them fight.

Sorry I dont know what else to suggest, unless you can fit another large tank in somewhere????

i have a 200 litre cubeish tank sat outside but i just dont think its big enough, i dont know :(

we could get rid of the dining table and stick it in the middle of the room

I think its probably a bit small, depends on the dimensions, but it may work for a short while, but wont help the long term problem.

I vote get rid of the table then

oh spishkey, im sorry to hear this, it was these two fighting then??.. if its a particular time in the evening, try feeding them at that time, take their mind off eating eachother, but i do know that when jambo and buddie started to fight, nothing could be done and one had to go, if you vet the person 1 of them goes to, they may have a fish that one of the oscars will buddy up to ( stranger things have happend) but no u cant keep them together now, as it will get worse and 1 the dominating one may well end up killing the weaker one, bear in mind, when you got them they were very very neglected, they may have just never gotten on, but have just found the strength to ressume the battle

you did your very best with them,, this is just the way oscars are im afraid, get an advert in the paper or online, and let the buyer choose which one to take, that way you wont have to feel any guilt :(

i think the battles the other week were with the catfish, but now it is between the two of them :(

i tried, bloody hell i tried with them :(((

i know you did love, and its so sad that its turned out like this, but they have to be seperated, and you cant have the children being frightend either,if the worst did happen and one of them saw it you would never forgive yourself, you have done a bloody wonderful job, there should be more people like you,but youve done your part, now its time to let one go :-( i know just how you feel, beleive me, i kept buddie as long as i could, hoping that they would get over it, but they dont,it will just get worse,in the end buddie was a quivering wreck, and then i felt bad that i didnt take action earlier to save him from that, why this lark is called a hobbie,i will never know, seems to be an awful lot of heartaches when it goes wrong :(

junior and hatton (junior not soo small now lol)

SPISHKEY :D

hey dont panic just yet, oscars rituals are pretty violent, mine often do this, its a test of strength, lip locking tugging back and forth, mine did this for well over an hour the other day!!! problem is if one pulls away then the others the victor, usually the other one will swim away, but as i said this is part and parcal of owning cichlids in pairs, or more than one species, as you say 99% of the time its ok, i would not worry,,,,,,,
if it gets worse than this then, take them both out and keep them somewhere wilst you totally rearrange the tank, then rebag both of them seperatly, float the bags for about 1hr next to each other, realase the loser first, then give it another hour, then realease the hardened criminal, this should work, if it does not then, sorry but you will have to rehome one of them, i would be inclined to rehome the one causing the trouble,,,,,,,,,Ive been there with different species of cichlids, as you can see in my photo an oscar and a jag<best buddys for 1.5years then suddenly one brutis the jag took it opon himself to cause total mayhem  now brutis is in a tank all alone, even attacks me when i do water changes, but cannot bring myself to rehome him<hes beautiful.....

so as i said, see how it goes, beacause this sounds like normal behaviour for oscars, it looks awful sometimes, if you say its a recent thing, id say this is the time where there establishing whos boss,,,,

do they also go head to tail and quiver?
clean slates and rocks with there mouths?
did pits in the gravel/sand?
what size are they at present?

beautiful oscars bubblehead,,,,,welcome to the madhouse

do they also go head to tail and quiver? yup
clean slates and rocks with there mouths? yup theyve been doing this for about 3 weeks, we thought perhaps they were a pair preparing for eggs but nothing.did pits in the gravel/sand? yup as abovewhat size are they at present? one is 22cm the other 20cm. im guessing about a year to 18months oldish?

well at this point it sounds like the mating ritural, mine have been with me two years no,,,always do this but nothings happened as of yet, but for the most part there fine, so either a male n female, or a female n female,,,, either ways fine, as long as its not male n male, they would prob have killed each other by now

What a shame Spishkey.... That must be heart wrenching to watch. Hopefully you can try what nelly said and things go well...... Best wishes

Welcome bubblehead. Great look O's! u have any other pics?

Just thought I'd update everyone on Pumba. He is now partying in the 75g disease free.... and not really sulking either surprisingly. Pulled through like a champion :D

Unfortunately his buddy still needs to stay in his treatment tank until he is completely rid of Ich.

aw glad to hear pumba is feeling better.
no fighting last night from my two monsters. id love to just 'wait and see' but im petrified one of them is gonna get hurt. but like you say they probably would have killed each other by now if they were male and male?
