هi always used to stroke my oscars, you have to let them get used to putting hands in the aqaurium , the best time is when there young and dont show fear

might be a good idea to one put the platy fry in the tank, just think your adding to the stock

thanks for the comments.

Turbos was barely an inch when we got him so he's still kinda small. he's probably somewhere between 4 and 5 inches.

here's another pic.

i don't suppose someone can tell me what those spotsalong his chin are? i've never noticed them before and they're invisible without the flash. should i worry ?

looking good jambo :good:

TOBIGBARA,,,,Oscars have sensor pits dotted around there face and chin area so to me at present it looks like that, but as always keep an eye on him,,,look at the links i put on the 1st post of this thread, might help you to get to know what is ok and whats not :good:

yeah jambo had those tho they are not so visible now, i thought it maybe the start of HTH for a while... but thankfully not, but please read those links that nelly put up, they are full of great info and its always good to be prepared :)

I pet a couple of my bettas... you just have to get them used to hand feeding and having your hands in the tank. Eventually they associate the 'petting' with food. Although an oscar is a little different than a betta . It's like a really big betta :p. I would probably refrain from messing with an aggressive oscar for fear of my fingers being mistaken for food.

There is no harm in stroking your oscar as long as it's not a regular thing. If it happens often, the slime coat gets worn down. Plus, you run the risk of bringing contaminants into the tank if you are petting your oscar all the time.

The last two pics of Turbo and Jambo are great! Jambo is looking good Shelagh :good:

Lol... as I was typing this Pumba got quite the scare. A couple ninja guppies are still around the tank from yesterday, and Pumba is on the prowl. Unfortunately for him he saw a bit of the pleco's tail under a rock and when to attack it. At the same time the plec's tail shot up vertically from underneath the rock and just about gave Pumba a heart attack. He might be afraid of the guppies now

sigh... he's sulking in his little corner now after the incident

i've read the links you put on the first page and they're really informative and helpful. thumbs up to you and thanks :D

Unfortunately i still got a little wierded out when i saw those things even tho there was no reason. thanks for the reassurance too.

Jambo looks really good. the bright spots look yellowish to me. i've never seen that before and i like it. is it the flash that does that?

hia, i think thats due to the fact that the sun is beaming in on the opposite side of the tank, the white patches on him are his war wounds from when he was a baby and crammed into a tiny tank with lots of other oscars at the LFS
the marks IMO are perfectly normal, i do remember thinking jambo was about to grow a beard when he had them, they should go as he gets older :)
really cant get over his( turbos) colours tho, hes so dark, really handsome :)

Hi,

I have got 2 oscars - will post pics later. they are about 7 inches. Either a male and female or 2 females because they regularly have eggs but someone eats them after a day or two.
Alison.

that's good.

thanks for the comment. i wish i could take credit. :D he's normally that dark but every now and then he'll get into muscle flexing competition with the dominant severum and half of him will turn almost white and the orange gets a bit brighter. it's really something to see. if i can ever get a pic of it i'll post it.

woooh thats a first :shout:
