Johns 450ltr (110 Gals) Journal

I've spent virtually the same as yourself in ratio to the size of our tanks (mines smaller 125Ltr) but I still try to do everything on the cheap.

At the moment I wait until pets at home get their new stock of Tropica in (I work next door and spend a lot of dinner times in there) and buy them the same day 3 pots for £10. They are always good condition as the P@H haven't let loose their poor equipment and snailfest on them yet. lol

Hi John, just read this for the first time -- sounds like a great plan!

Have you figured out how you're going to handle the water changes? That's one of the reasons I opted not to go the EI route -- 36 gallon water changes seemed too much -- I can only image doing 50 gallon changes! Right now, I'm only changing out 10-15 gallons per week.

The larger tanks can definitely be challenging but if you start off right, you'll avoid heartache. Two of the biggest mistakes I made:

1. I added my "algae crew" after I had an algae problem. It's good that you are putting them in there at the start. Amano shrimp, in particular, are awesome little algae eaters.

2. I let my plant mass get way too dense. I got so caught up in the beautiful plant growth that I didn't notice the bottom half of the stem plants weren't getting any light.

Anyway, can't wait to see pictures! It's going to be a killer setup. Be sure to include pics of the hardware, too!

Hi Sondra, yes the water changes are going to be a challenge luckily i have a patio door close by which goes straight into the garden so my wifes plants will get plenty of water each week,my main concern right now is refilling it the thought of boiling the kettle so many times to get the water up near temp is gonna be a chore. I will start to include some pics very soon. regards john :flowers: :)

I wouldn`t worry about the temperature of the replacement water too much if I were you John. When I do my 50% water changes the temperature is straight out of the cold tap. My Otos and Corydoras make a point of swimming in the stream of cold water as I add it. The tank drops by about by 3 or 4 degrees and the fish seem to love it. Apparently, it can even induce mating.

60+ posts and not one single picture yet. I think this must be a record John. God knows how many posts you`ll get when the pictures appear.

Dave.

I don't know who agrees with this, but I use hot/warm water from the tap. We have fairly new piping etc and I can't say I have had any problems with this in 10+ months of water changes.

Oooooo, wood. Finding a great piece of wood can really make your day. Finding a great piece of wood and not paying through the teeth for it, that is priceless.
