Allan from John Allan Aquariums, at MY house!! What a lovely guy.
He came to help with Eheim 2217 Classic because it's been noisy and he was passing my house (lucky me!) well we tried 3 motorheads and it didn't make a different, we ended up turning the outflow tap down, he said he'd never heard that noise before, a sort of whistling grinding sound, so we figured the 2217 was too highly rated for a 250 litre aquarium and he said as long as we keep the intake taps fully open, you can have the outflow as low as you need it to be, it's certainly helped. What a great experience for me!

Gee mermaid... now that was disappointing... never heard of the guy.... I thought you're talking Dr. Herbert Axlerod (or William T Innes)...... Now THAT is aquatic royalty!!

There's no air left in that filter, that's for sure

It whistles when the outlet runs fully

He's been the rep for Eheim in this country since 1970 how can I argue with that?
"In 1970 we were appointed UK distributors of Eheim power filters which are an important part of our programme today and we remain Eheims service centre for repairs, spare parts and technical information."

I would have thought, that if a machine like that has taps, they are meant to be used

the taps are made to help remove the filter when cleanimg
if they were a important part of the design the the filter would have came with the taps when it was released on the market years ago but the filter dint come with the tap when 1st put on the market

if you are slowing the filter down then it was a waste of money which you could have saved by buying a 2215 and running that at full pace

I've just checked, it's only turned down by about 2mm, it's not like quarter or half way down, it's just to take the edge of the whistling, I can't think why all 3 of the motorheads made my unit whistle though
Hi de hi
Im glad to hear that john could come round and try and help. He is an amazing gent, but Im still struggling as to why the thing is still noisy and when he attached other units to it the noise was still there ??? My next route to go down would be be to have a look at your electrics. How old are your electrics and do you know a sparki electrician who can put a meter across your points and check that the voltage is good and that everything is running healthy. Another thing which I might try and that would be to get an extension lead and plug it into your neighbours socket and see if the filter runs any quieter. It may run with a lot less power but that would be down to the thickness of the cable you are using. If it does run quieter then use there electric. It would also make your future electric bills more affordable.. Salty P

the filter uses so little power i think you would have more problems with other things that use more power

i would rip out all the pipe work and install from the start

it could also have something to do with the height of the tank to high can make problems and to low can also

ALL eheim filters have a max and min running Height

Yeah, Good Point. Im not name dropping but this Eheim bloke "John" really does have a passion for his eheims, so any height issues he should have dealt with as he walked through the door. But, we all can tend to forget the basics when dealing with fault finding problems. and I fully agree with you with what you have said about slowing the filter down by reducing the flow. Maybe if she tries slowly lifting the filter of the floor and listens for any changes in the whistling, then the problem might lay there. Im running an Eheim 3704 Air Pump in my sons tank and that's got a really annoying buzz to it so I bought 6 carpet tiles and tacked them to the sides of the cupboard, and that has made a huge difference. But all air pumps buzz (or is it just eheims). The filter MermaidMel is using should run quiet but that's not the case. anyone with any suggestions ??

Ok, to answer a few points, my house is 16 years old so I don't think there is a problem with electrics, the filter is on a thickish book to slightly lift it up because I didn't want to put any stress on the pipes, as I cut them exactly the right length, they do not bend or kink, anyway it wasn't John that came, it was his brother Allan and he said that open back cabinets and glass doors are going to contribute somewhat to the sound I could hear, because there is no way of soundproofing the unit. The whistling has stopped now and my taps are fully open. I have put a towel on the lid and a small tin of paint, which deadens the resonance and we pretty much can't hear the thing any more. So all sorted now. Thanks everyone :)
