Allan from John Allan Aquariums, at MY house!! What a lovely guy.
He came to help with Eheim 2217 Classic because it's been noisy and he was passing my house (lucky me!) well we tried 3 motorheads and it didn't make a different, we ended up turning the outflow tap down, he said he'd never heard that noise before, a sort of whistling grinding sound, so we figured the 2217 was too highly rated for a 250 litre aquarium and he said as long as we keep the intake taps fully open, you can have the outflow as low as you need it to be, it's certainly helped. What a great experience for me!

Very rare to have an owner of any type of business thats so hands on with the customers. The Green Machine are the same, when I was there the other day the owner was going out to meet a fella who couldn't find the shop.

I was just lucky to be in the path of where he was coming from and where he was going to, but I feel strangely blessed to have met him and had him fit my filter for me, he said in all his 50 years, he has never heard a filter make that noise... only I could have a filter that makes a noise that even they have never heard!

 OMG only you

Well least its quieter, but Ive never had to keep the outflow down in any size tank Ive used them on, oh well never mind, bet you never take advice from me again

LOL I know, really bizarre though, he was stumped, a man with 60 years of aquatic experience, 50 years of Eheim experience, what else can I say really. It is much easier to use than the Tetratec and less of a pain to clean than a Fluval so I'm happy with that side of it, but I am planning on asking my carpenter to create a wooden filter house to keep it quieter, because I have glass doors and an open back cabinet, that can't be helping. He couldn't believe it was whistling though, I'd love to know what's caused it.

My new(ish) 2217 is way noisier than my new(ish) 2215. I'm sure it's down to the much increased output of the 2217 compared to the 2215. I've found that putting a large pebble on top of the 2217 motor housing helps quite a bit with noise. There seems to be quite a bit of resonant noise going on with it, which the pebble seems to deal with. I wish it was a tad quieter, although I have no complaints about it any other way.

Thank you SO much for posting this, you are the only person I have heard say their 2217 is noisy/noisier and I thought I was going mad. Allan did say (when he heard mine) it wasn't THAT noisy, that everyone's perception of noise are different and he has heard noisier, but I am satisfied that the reason for the noise coming from mine was the sheer jet of output into a relatively small tank (compared to what it should be used for I mean), it's rated for 600l tanks, mine is 265l and so obviously there's some sort of issue there. I like the idea of something heavy on the lid, I will try it and see.

Wrap a blanket around it, I did that with my first one for a few weeks until it settled.

royalty maybe but the wrong solution to the problem slowing down a filter

as the 2217 doesn't have a prime button you just need to shake it about a bit to get any air out

no point in have a filter thats not running at full pace

its also rubbish the tank being to small for the filter

i have run a pro3 2080 on a 2ft tank with no problems i think he just gave up and took the easy option out buy slowing the filter down which is not good for the motor

There's no air left in that filter, that's for sure

It whistles when the outlet runs fully

He's been the rep for Eheim in this country since 1970 how can I argue with that?
"In 1970 we were appointed UK distributors of Eheim power filters which are an important part of our programme today and we remain Eheims service centre for repairs, spare parts and technical information."

I would have thought, that if a machine like that has taps, they are meant to be used

the taps are made to help remove the filter when cleanimg
if they were a important part of the design the the filter would have came with the taps when it was released on the market years ago but the filter dint come with the tap when 1st put on the market

if you are slowing the filter down then it was a waste of money which you could have saved by buying a 2215 and running that at full pace

I've just checked, it's only turned down by about 2mm, it's not like quarter or half way down, it's just to take the edge of the whistling, I can't think why all 3 of the motorheads made my unit whistle though

it could be a number of things to many bends in the pipes a faulty tap

or maybe a block or kink in the drain pipe so the filter is not getting enough water to feed the pump

Hi de hi
Im glad to hear that john could come round and try and help. He is an amazing gent, but Im still struggling as to why the thing is still noisy and when he attached other units to it the noise was still there ??? My next route to go down would be be to have a look at your electrics. How old are your electrics and do you know a sparki electrician who can put a meter across your points and check that the voltage is good and that everything is running healthy. Another thing which I might try and that would be to get an extension lead and plug it into your neighbours socket and see if the filter runs any quieter. It may run with a lot less power but that would be down to the thickness of the cable you are using. If it does run quieter then use there electric. It would also make your future electric bills more affordable.. Salty P
