I've just found my oldest female pepper cory dying. She was the one with the cut to her tail that I tried in vain to fix. She was looking better but stopped eating a couple of days ago and now she's gone. I'm a bit upset

In the end I've had to do the kindest thing and put her to sleep along with another neon that's been struggling since the heat wave last week. I figured if I was getting the clove oil out and setting up 'the death jug' then I may aswell end it for both.

I upset about the cory though ... I tried everything I could think of to fix her sore tail but it looks like it just got the better of her

Sorry to hear that Akasha :(

This happens to most of us at one point or another, never nice but knowing it is the best course of action helps a bit.

:'( I'm really sorry to hear about you fish, I also love my peppered corys, I would be heart broken if one died. Like you said, you tried everything you could, she doesn't have to deal with a cut tail anymore, wherever she is.

thanks for the replies. I'm still upset but I know it was right to end it than watch her suffer and die slowly. She's in the giant fish tank in the sky now at peace

I am so sorry, Akasha.
Poor liitle girl, I to thought she would pull through.

her cut had more or less healed but it had left dead scales attached to her spine and flapping about. When I found her layed on her side this afternoon unable to swim I netted her into a jug. It was only then that I realised she still had some fungus growing - it was minor but there all the same. I just run out of things to try and treat it with

Oh no, I am sorry, I know how hard you tried with her..

thanks Nic ... it's really helpful that you guys are reassuring me that I did all I could. Losing fish to old age is one thing, losing a fish to something you've tried to fix like this cory is harder

Fungus is a hard thing. You did what you could to help the poor thing. No shame in that. I've had to put fish down from injuries and other sickness before. It's not easy, but its better than suffering.

it is indeed. As upsetting as it is I owe my fish a peaceful death when it is needed. I've currently got peppered female number two looking weary ... My peppered cories are all getting old now - around 5 years old and the females especially are looking 'tired'.

I've come to a stage with my tank where I have maybe 50% old stock and 50% new. My old stock have been dropping off one by one over the last 6 months. It does suit me though as I'd like to aim for a complete re-start at some point within the next year. New tank, new decor, new stock etc. It'll be easier to aim for that once all my old fish have passed on.
I guess what's happening is a general 'wind down' leaving me free to have a fresh start

yeah ... I'm watching the other female now and she's not gonna be with me much longer either. It's so sad but they are all my old stock and all are heading toward the 4-5 year old mark and so it's all to be expected

Thank you Vethian
