It's a little chilly

Here is what doesn't show in my weather post. We share a driveway with 2 other houses. It is 1/8 mile long and uphill almost the whole way. Our driveway starts at the main one and goes uphill from there and then we have a circular driveway. We refer to the upill entry part as the "tongue."

So right now were are getting rain on all the blacktop. It will be there as the temps drop to freezing and way below. The result is ice from top to bottom. No way to drive on it, no to walk on it. You can put on ice skates and go downhill but not back up.

Once the rain/snow has stopped for sure the guy will come and salt and sand the main driveway. We are friends with him and he will also do our "tongue." but we have to do the rest.

How does that work? I used to HATE keeping the chickens watered in winter...If I remember right we got some kind of electric water dispenser for them, but it didn't really work.
I believe the salt prevents the water from condensing into ice so it doesn't freeze. Salt is also more buoyant so the bottle will float in the water, "bouncing" around the bowl. This will cause agitation in the water, preventing it from freezing.

And our diesel froze, so our boiler doesn’t work, so our under floor heating doesn’t work, so I have a heater but that’s it 😭

Oh no!! That needs to be fixed 😬
Sorry Juice...
Is that other heater you have strong enough do you think?

If I stay in the one room with it 😆
It can’t be fixed until the temp rises and it melts 😂

Ah ok. Yah, kinda figured... Can you buy a little extra diesel while you wait for the other stuff to melt?

Nahhhh it’s in a 1000 gallon tank haha

It’s the thinner pipes to the house that froze

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... Yah that's a problem 😂
I wish I could help in some way... Sorry.
So the diesel is literally in a tank directly connected to the heater then... Gotcha.
Yah, Idk what to do there. Just try to stay warm. Cover up in lots of layers when you go to bed so you don't freeze overnight.
Don't leave space heaters running while you sleep. Cause then you may get "extra toasty"... That's not good 😂

I'm supposed to be colder than you, in Canada. The wind chill is below freezing, for sure, but we are getting violent sheets of rain and sustained winds almost as bad as the hurricane a few weeks ago. Quite the gale. In daytime, the ocean was spectacular. I just had the dog out back and the wind was fierce - at 6"3, 225 pounds, I was leaning into it and not falling. It's a noisy night.

Maybe the Corys will spawn...

The vastness of this storm... we were talking to friends 16 hours drive away, and they were in blizzard conditions, the same as family members 40 hours' drive from me. We are still not too badly off as the ferocious winds have abated, but last night was a full on gale. As I look out the window, the breakers on the Bay of Fundy are enormous, and the waves are hammering in endlessly. Those are Christmas shipwreck seas.

It was snowing a few minutes ago - big fluffy flakes. They were driving in hard, but as they reached the level of our back deck, they would suddenly shoot back upwards again. You don't often see snow falling up.

Hopefully, people who lost heating and power can get them back quickly. We had a mix of torrential rain and sleet last night, and if it had been snow, as we would normally expect at this time of year, we would have been buried in it. So much of North America has had serious snow - stay safe or be safe.
