another fish delivery delayed... it would have worked out nicely today, as it's our best / warmest weather in a week... tomorrow back to the below average temps... these were coming from Dan's, & no weather issues between us, but a flight must have been delayed waiting for a connecting flight from south where they were getting unusual snow... shipping has been really bad lately... might have to just start ordering spring and fall from now on, in case of delays

We ordered Two Parrot fish from the not so lfs. They are happy to order what they do not have at what appear to be good prices. Doing this means they spend a couple of weeks in their isolation tanks lessening our risk.

Happy to pay a small premium that is more than offset by shipping savings. Plus it supports the store.

I don't have a lfs... I do have a "pet store" main business is dog grooming that does have "some" fish I've bought exactly 3, two survived quarantine... but they do have a good supply of foods, including frozen, and do sell feeders, so I buy feeders locally, and all my frozen food from them

just to clarify, these left the shipper and are sitting in Minneapolis for an extra day... hope they are keeping them warm...

Shipping fish any time of year spooks me . I had Aphyosemion australe in the mail for five days three years ago in the hottest stretch of weather in ages . They made it but I got a lot more grey hairs until they were in my aquarium’s for a week . Your experience with the Crenuchus spiluris was the opposite extreme . A guy has to bite the bullet and roll the dice if there’s a fish he just HAS to have but I think spring and early fall are the only truly safe times and then only with dealers and sellers with a good track record like Dan’s Fish or a trusted AKA member . Those weather delays this time of year are unavoidable . Cargo jets get delayed for de-icing and ground stops or cancelled altogether .

Depending on the fish the temperature is the main issue as Dan ships in pressurized individual packages to help maintain oxygen in the water.

You can contact Dan's at:
and probably get a detailed status report and to also make sure that they are aware of the delay in case there is an issue. Your contact will likely be responded to by Jonny. He is cool and goes above and beyond to be helpful. Just note that you need to be pithy in the comment box as they don't allow for a lot of words. I THINK the max is like 500 characters.

Actually I'm a bit surprised that Dan's shipped with our current weather conditions as we have been under a winter storm warning for several days. Only about 8 inches of snow so far but the low temperatures have been as low as minus 13F. Sort of funny as, come Monday, the highs will be back around 40F.

If it seems that I know a lot about Dan's Fish it is only due to the fact that I do even though I have never had anything shipped from them. LOL! I just take a 2-3 minute walk from my apartment to their warehouse which is right next to my apartments. While I don't know the people well I do know some of the staff on a casual level, especially Jonny. I am sure that they will take care of you if there is a problem. If, in the worst case, the fish show up DOA take photos while the fish are still in the packaging to help show the situation.

That's my reaction to this also--surprise that the fish were even shipped. Neither Wetspot nor Aquatic Clarity are shipping. I doubt any of the major suppliers are.

this was ordered at Christmas, so, so many orders are way behind... the hang up was in Minneapolis, cold, but not weather related... hoping they kept them warm

The place that I was hoping to order from before the cold came in just received 20 boxes of Colombian fish and an Asian shipment. I notice he isn't posting the arrivals to his website as he's probably discouraging orders online right now. It's better for business not to have to say "no" as a lot of us are impractical about our climate.

It took me a long time to order online in ideal conditions, and now I find myself tempted in the dead of winter. What kind of cruel seller gets Carnegiella myersi in January!!!

I have full tracking on this order, shipped with UPS overnight delivery... this package has been stuck in Minneapolis for 20 hours???

I don't put that on the seller, and it was the best day we have had in Minnesota for a week, so it was not local weather effected... but maybe the plane that flys this north / south route, got trapped in the unusual winter weather in the deep south, and they didn't have a plane available???

shipping has gotten challenging, we had a pallet shipping 600 miles, for work, that was sent Fed Ex, and they lost it, and haven't been able to find it in the last month... this was bar coded, just like a fish box...

I am disappointed, as only a fraction of the fish will be available to me, if I only order, in the spring or fall... and actually, maybe this is Amazons fault??? locally they are shipping everything themselves, since the 1st of the year... that's a lot of packages, so maybe it's messing up cargo shipments, with the change in volumes???

I worked at the airport here in my town loading and unloading cargo jets for UPS . In 2007 things were easy and not much came through . Shipping by air was then still for really special things because of the expense . Now we come to today and everything goes by air to satisfy the public’s demand for immediate delivery . Cargo jets are really expensive and FedEx and UPS only have so many of them . They’re spread thin these days . The air system is overwhelmed . Your fish are competing for a seat on the plane with a jar of mayonnaise that somebody just has to have because they’re too lazy to go to the store . That’s the reality of the situation and it isn’t changing anytime soon .

It's an issue in our fish oriented lives. I'm in a small city. My LFS is run by a great guy who stocks a few ordinary species that don't interest me anymore. It's a bread and butter store.

If I want more challenging fish, or fish I haven't kept, I have to look to shipping. But the window here is a short. I can safely order from April to June, then from August to November. I can unsafely order in the off season.

But very few stores will bring in a lot of fish in summer. People don't buy them. The busy season here is the lead in to Christmas, when people hunker down in their houses and look at their aquariums because it's too cold out.

It's what happens when you choose to live out in the sticks...

It does not look good… I just received the box, and the water temperatures are around 40 degrees, the Bloody Mary Hillstream's ( a bucket list fish ), are both upside down in their bags… the giant Oto is dead, & the snails I would have no idea… these were received at work, where I have a hot room, where I can set the temp to 80 degrees, I placed the open box in there, for a couple hours to bring up the temperature, before I run them home…

Can confirm. Johnny is great and super helpful. I got fish from Dan's and was completely happy.
