When i do a water change i have 5 gallons of pure ro, i dont do anything to it, and mix it with about 3 gallons of hot tap water to bring up the temp, that has been treaded for chemicals, and add it straight to the tank is that ok?

Or should i be doing it differantly?

I thinking of stoping using tap water and just using RO what chemicals should i use to add back all the elements the fish need?

I used to use proper ph but was told not to use it and any way i now have a planted tank.

any ideas?

I can not really help you with RO water. I looked into it and thought it was more of a hassle to do.
I use tap water. Make it a little hotter then the tank water. Condition it to remove the chemicals in the water and let it sit half an hour to an hour before I do my water change. Been doing it this way for around a year and a half with no problems.

There is nothing wrong with mixing tap water to acheive the desired results. If you wanted to go alll R/O you must use appropriate additives, available at most shops.

Thats what im going to do, im using ro rite and ph 6.5, should be ok with that, shouldent i?

Don't many people on here keep discus then?!!
being expensive and requiring their own conditions, most of us do not keep discus...it is that simple

are you looking for more advice or something? i think your question has been answered, right? if not, there is a TON of info on google pertaining to discus.

I'm not sure how ph 6.5 works, but if it's like ph up or down, it doesn't add anything benifitial, it only changes the ph... temperarily. Look for a product like Kent RO Right, or something similar - it will add the necessary minerals.

Yer thanks freddyk, i have ro rite, did a 5 gallon water change yesterday using all ro and cleaned the filter, so im hoping things will improve.
the discus are still dark and look miserable.

RO right will add missing minerals but it does very little to raise the pH of my RO water. I use another additive called pH Adjuster to bring it up but it deos seem to take a lot more than according to the directions on the bottle. I also boiled tap water to raise the temp and take some of the rawness off the new water.

I wouldnt add pure RO water directly to the tank, boil some water first, enough to bring it to 29C and see how you get on with that. You could also try leaving the lights off for a few days to calm the fish down.

i have a ph adjuster thats brings the water to 6.5, dont worry its not proper ph!!
