I could be wrong, but it looks pretty much like one of my plecos, and I am 99% sure they are both common.

Most likely it is a common or maybe a related species which most of their closer relatives tend to grow in the 12+" range. Does your friend know what it was sold as?

i would say that was a common a mod will probably move this to the pleco section soon anyway then youll get A STRAIGHT answer

If it's from Pets @ Home, it's definately going to be common or sailfin, which, I don't know though. I kjnow our local one sells mainly commons, but it might be sailfin.

Not strictly true. Pets@home have royals and clowns on their import lists as well.

Well, tis not a clown, and you wouldn't buy either as an algae cleaner becasue you couldn't be bothered to, you'd buy the cheapest one.

Well yeah, I was just saying that they're on P@H import list occasionally is all.

Well thanks guys, Iv been looking at pics of sailfins and they have that big top fin and nobby doesnt.. but he doesnt look anything like Ivors common... urrghhh. and yes its true where you said you wouldnt pay alot for one just coz you couldnt be bothered cleaning the tank. Im glad I saved it though. I did want a leopard one but they were £7 at pets@home.

Common plecs have a wide range of coloration and design to their body and in fact there are many species under the "Common" banner and some hybrids so actual species identification is sometimes impossible.
