Hey people, can you help me out a bit?

I have a Toshiba Satellite A100-207 laptop (It's alright for me lol) and I want to find out
if my sound card is capable of a 5.1 surround sound?

I've searched for specifications, but the only place I found is here

Can any of you guys help me please?

Cheers,

Maximus :good:

dose it have multipul sound outputs?

If just the one I'll guess not.

If you want 5.1 have a look at USB sounds cards

Hmm, how do I find out if it has multiple sound outputs?

I'll have a look at USB sound cards now.

Cheers mate :good:

Maximus, you need to check your laptop's sound outputs. There is probably just a single output (headphone jack) and a single input (microphone). You're probably going to need a USB soundcard that supports 5.1 surround.

Are you trying to play music from your laptop on a home stereo system that's 5.1 surround capable?

If so I may have a suggestion for you that would be better than the soundcard (you could go wireless).

Let me know!

Oh wireless!

Just checked, and yeah, only the one sound input and output.

I haven't got the 5.1 yet (if I even do) but it was going to be a computer 5.1, but home stereo won't be much different will it?

Cheers :good:

Have a look at the Apple Airport express with airtunes. It's about $100 here, it is PC compatible and what it does is plug into a wall next to your stereo, then you connect it to your stereo and it plays your music through the wireless transmitter on your laptop. It can also double as a wireless router if you have your DSL modem near the stereo.

Cheers for that mate :good:

But I'll still have to setup the 5.1 with it's wires, so I'm not too bothered

The 5.1 would be setup around a desk in my room, so I'm not bothered about plugins, because I don't move it
much when I'm in my room

I've been looking at USB sounds, and you can get them for silly money here but they look dodgy . But this one looks a bit more trustworthy.

No doubt I'll just go into an electronics shop (Currys, Dixons ect.) and get one that I know works.

Can anyone reccomend a place in the UK to get one from?
Are the ones in the links above even what I'm looking for?

Thanks again :good:

5.1 refers to the speaker system, ie 5 satellites and a sub. You could probably get a 5.1 speaker system that would distribute the sound from your stereo jack to the various speakers. They can ever do cleaver things like add environmental effects to them to make you think you are in a concert hall, the fill from the rear speakers really helps the effect. If you want the full 5.1 sound experience you really need a more advanced sound card, either a USB or even better a PC express card. Basically it's a new PC interface that is on newer laptops. Looking at the spec sheet you linked to I think your machine might have one.

Try http://www.soundblaster.com/products/produ...mp;product=9103

for a good USB card that has capacity for true 5.1 or 7.1 surround.

Or even better, you could try

This is a cracking card and from my early searches only about £60 to £70 Just check you can get the speaker connection breakout, but even so the card can make your headphones sound like you're in the film anyway.

I know it's all Creative stuff, but for a good quality consumer product you can't go far wrong. You could spend a couple of hundred pounds on a professional grade firewire audio interface, but I don't think you need to go to those extremes.

Edit - you posted while I was writing. You might be able to get those cards I suggested at PC world.
