Is My Desk Strong Enough

ill try but i dont have money for a stand right now maybe later

but mine has bottom support plus the wood is 2 inches thick
Does it have a support beam directly under where the tank would be setting? Most desks do not because they are open underneath to allow for a chair. That is the key point that needs to be supported. Just as in the example I gave above with the plywood, if you stuck another block under the middle of the board, then it would be fine. There has got to be additional support directly under the tank.

Your topic title as well as your original post says a desk. What is a sofa table? Do you mean like a coffee table or end table? If so, I'd say it is even more unlikely that it would support a tank as those usually have no interior supports and are open underneath.

Just use it......chances are your going to do what you want anyway, regardless of what people say. Unless you suddenly change your mind  but that never happens does it?

The tank will weigh almost 300 gallons. Sit on it with a friend for a few minutes, if nothing happens then it should be okay.
I totally disagree. If there aren't any supports directly under the tank, there won't be a problem with having weight on it for a short time. Over a period of weeks the weight will begin to cause problems. If you want to try an experiment, take a piece of 1/2" plywood and place it between 2 blocks so the edges are supporting the full weight. Sit on it for 5 minutes and most likely nothing will happen. Then put a 300 lb weight on it and leave it. I guarantee that within a month or so (probably only a few days) the plywood will break. There is a big difference between short term stress and long term stress.

Yes, I never really though of that! You are an endless, well written aquatic encyclopedia with all the answers! :p Thanks for clarifying!

oh ok that was stupid  but im goin use it as a temp until i have enogh money to get a stand

its not a desk its a sofa table

that makes it worse! a sofa table is only designed to be strong enough to a couple of vases and some knick-knacks, NOT A 300 lb FISH TANK. (for those asking what a sofa table is, it's a decorative table intended to fit behind a sofa. due to their decorative nature, most have very thin "elegant" legs which can be as long as 36" in order for the tabletop to reach the height of the sofa's back). unless this was a very expensive piece of furniture, it is my suspicion that the tabletop is built out of very small pieces of wood glued together and covered with some sort of veneer. i have zero confidence in it's ability to serve as a tank stand for any extended period of time.

Pretty much what I was thinking. I was actually thinking of an end table or something like that but basically the same premise, no support in the middle, only on the corners.

Why do you ask for advice then not listen to anyone? I think it's fair to say your table CANNOT hold the tank. You are going to end up with a cracked/totaly broken tank. Then that will cost you more to put right than it would have cost to just get a proper stand.

I was gonna say that exact same thing on this thread the other day and that was before the 'sofa table' incident
