Internal Parasites - Worming Medication In The Uk

I always worm everything I buy as you never know where the fish are from or if they have been wormed before - depends on the importer and whether they do it or not.
I would always treat new fish weekly for a month whilst in quaranteen as if the fish is infected with camallanus worms for example or egg laying skin flukes it can take time for the eggs to hatch as no wormer will kill eggs, just like snail killers not killing snail eggs

Your best bet is to try some of the well known discus dealers/importers or try some of the online quatics places or google for it, some shops sell it although its mainly the discus dealers that do at the moment as production is limited to the availability of the base product which is hard to get. Using a pig wormer etc as far as I can tell is actually illegal as of last October and you never know the side effects of the wormer used.

the one leased before the one i have now...you had to be willing to let your arm be pratically yanked off :S.

the one i have now is much better but she still doesn't like the nasty tasting medicine being forced into her mouth.

ok, can anyone who has used this tell me how quickly I should expect the tank to clear? I have an external filter with filter floss as the final stage. I treated on Saturday evening and the tank went nice and cloudy as expected. Sunday morning when I got up the tank was crystal clear. Is this happening too fast or is it normal? Should I remove the filter wool for a couple of days when I treat again to give the fish a chance to truly digest the medicine?

I'm using it to treat my guppies who have Camallanus :(

edit: typos!

can someone advise me on flubenol 15 usage.
i have followed the instructions for dosing but i'm unsure what to do next.
i added my first dose to the tank today, what id like to know is how long to leave it before i do a water change.
also how and when do you add the next dosages, would i do a water change a week later after i added the first dose then add another dose straight after?. do you wait longer or shorter or add it a few days later when it clears up.

it has been around 12 hours since i treated and it's just as cloudy as when i first added it. noticed my fish flicking still. how long does it take to see results.

here is my original thread with details of tank + water and my short story of whats happening.

Flubenol 15 has a half life of 7 days, so use it weekly when needed.
You dont need to do a water change after using it - makes do difference, when you do, just mix it with a little tank water and add it to the tank.
It will go cloudy, but that will clear up and the water will look very clear. :)

Just wanted to confirm that the stuff seems safe - I ordered the stuff two days ago and recieved it yesterday. I put it in the tank last night and all cleared overnight. All the fish seemed perfectly happy in there (I have 2xAngels, 4xKeyholes, 2xBN Plecos).
Only thing is, it hasn't worked yet as far as I can tell.
I put it in the tank for one of my angels, that hasn't eaten for over 3 weeks. He is almost inverted he's so skinny. Previously I have tried No.9 for internal parasites to no avail. No other signs of illness. I just dont know what to do anymore. Tank conditions are absolutely fine, and all the other fish are very healthy.
How long does this stuff take to work normally?
I don't want him to die and it feels like I've tried everything now. :-(

Ok - Update...still no avail, my poor angel still wont eat and looks emaciated. The only slight improvement I can figure is that he swims towards the food - just doesn't do anything when he gets there. I've spoken to many people who just say to give up and let what will be - be. But there must be something I can do. I just wish he could talk and tell me what's wrong.

So far I have tried Aquasafe No.9 (anti-internal parasite) and No.5 (just to keep tank healthy), small amount of aquarium salt, tempting with bloodworms & different kinds of food, luring the other fish to the other end of the tank so he could feed on his own, putting him in quarenteen, putting in more plants, and finally this flubinol 15.

There are no external signs of disease. He hasn't fed since the day he was bought nearly 4 weeks ago. All of the other fish are thriving really well. The conditions in the tank are absolutely fine. It is a 240L tank so plenty of space. Lots of hiding places. He has long stringy clearish poo. It should be internal parasites, but I've tried so much already to remove them.

Does ANYBODY know what I can do to help my sick angel? :-(

The biggest problem is that the med that will work is unavailable for use with fish in the UK. Metronidazole works excellent with this problem, you may be able to get dimetronidazole through a vet. Dimetro is legal for use with fish in the UK, metro is not.

If you get dimetronidazole it should work similar to metronidazole. Here's my usual cut & paste for metro.

Put the angel in a quar tank, I usually use a 10 gallon. Increase the temp over a day or so to 90-94F. Treat daily with 40 mg/gallon metronidazole, with 50% water changes daily. If the fish isn't eating, don't feed for the first 3 days. After 3 days, get some frozen brine shrimp. Take a portion about the size of a few match heads, and sprinkle on some metro. You have to eyeball this one, make the shrimp look kind of like a tiny powdered donut. Once it thaws, mix it in & feed. Sometimes they still don't eat for a few days, but once they start to mouth the food & spit it out, the meds seem to get in their system real good. Continue medicating the water & food for 7-10 days.

Metronidazole is sold as flagyl, het-a-mit, and a few other names I can't recall offhand, used to treat hexamita & hole in the head. They usually suggest 20mg/gallon, this often isn't enough. Metro deteriorates in 8 hours, so you could do twice daily water changes. I've done this on the weekends when I have time.

I've also added epsom salt while using metro, this helps with any constipation issues, cleans out the digestive tract. I start with 1 teaspoon per 10 gallons of water, increasing by 1 teaspoon daily for 2 more days to bring it up to 3 teaspoons per gallon. You will have to adjust how much you use when doing water changes. You may want to give this a try.
