I was looking for pictures of wild bettas and i found this site...it's pretty interesting, i'm not saying i agree at all with it, but it gives a different spin on the general perseption on fighting bettas.
Sorry if it's been posted before.

I've only read through the top link so far, but the way i see it is that betta fighting simply does not go on here in the UK and i would expect it would be the same for the US too. We simply cannot change the way thailand works and they would quite rightly laugh in our faces if we tried to stop them fighting fish.
Betta fighting isn't nice although it has resulted in an extremely hardy strain of betta, but there little point in my opinion ranting about it because nothing will simply ever come of it.
The article didn't give me a whole load of newer perspective over betta breeding, i was expecting to see somthing revolutionary when the guy said there was more to betta fighting than just fighting, but i still only view it as that- a very old tradition in a country that has hardly any laws but has large crime rates and corruption, betta fighting is the least of their problems and won't be changing anytime soon :sly: .
Still though thanks for sharing the articles with us, good finds :)

Plakatthai is one of the best betta sites on the net. It's very imformative and well written. I love hearing how the folks overseas raise their fish.

having met precha in person and watched his fish fight in a real bangkok fighting fish ring i can say he is a genuine, good person who took the time to spend some time with me and my wife when we last visited. i have a good story about the experience and keep feeling i should post it here... ;)

Well I think its something that we should respect. It is part of there culture I assume. They would probably see it as being rediculiose if we went there and tryed to change things. Probably the same as we would feel if someone came to try and change our lifestyle and culture.

unless you spend time in the asian community that type of thinking is to be expected. of course you will never know about the fighting rings, why would you? still, to think that it doesn't go on in the thai, viet, lao, cambodian, etc. etc. communities where you live is incorrect.

We've all heard accounts of people putting 2 male bettas in the same cup at Walmart, Petsmart, etc. Also, kids buying bettas so they can 'fight' them. So yes, there is betta-fighting in the US and the UK, even if we don't want to believe it. Just because we don't see it, doesn't mean it isn't happening. I'm sure there are betta-fighting rings, just like there are dog fighting rings and cock fighting rings. They may be mostly in Thai and related communties, but it's expanding, if it hasn't already done so, into the rest of the population.

Please do! :D

I just wanted to comment that the bettas that get dumped into eachothers cups in wal-mart is completely different to the betta fighting in Thailand. In Thailand the bettas that they fight are the orginal short finned plakets that are more built for fighting as their fins are short so not much damage is inflicted whereas anyone who is dumping bettas in cups at wal-mart or doing it at home are using the typical veiltails who arn't equiped for fighting anymore as they have been bred originally from the short finned plaket to have long finnage. When two veils fight a lot of damage is done. Also the plakets they fight in Thailand are conditioned before every fight. These bettas are in tip top shape.
