I'm thinking either 2.5G or 5G would be a nice little betta tank.
I've already got the filter and heater left over. tank and light should be cheap enough.

5's are nice but don't be tempted to add tankmates, I love 2.5's, they're so perfect.

tankmate would likely only include a pair of ottos for algae control.
There are enough other tanks in this house to not worry about trying to stuff fish into a tiny tank

1x46 bow Front
1x54 Bow Front
1x37 show
2 x 5G hex's
soon to come 55G
and 155 bow ETD(11/04)

mmmkay 8) I only say that because the betta will terrorize his tankmates in a tank that size :)

Hee Heee,look at me hijack :kana: sorry,psgill :*) :*) :X

won't terrorize the otto's would he?

Oh yeah. I've only kept a betta in a community once (once was enough IME) and my poor, poor little otto's caught the worst of it (till death :/ ). The betta hated them more than anything, I never figured out why, maybe because he didn't understand them....or he hated the way their mouths were shaped

WOW
You guys have been busy.

Now - they Love the Setup's they are in. Both have settled down Nicely and There colors have improved.

I fed them Brine Shrimp Last night and Bloodworms from the Garden.

To say that these Jars are cruel is simply an Opinion. I have been keeping them in all Shapes and Sizes of jars and Containers since I found out that they Dont Require alot of Space.

Each Betta is Different.

The Giant Loves Big Open Spaces so I housed him in a 3 Litre Storage Drum/Container.

The rest Of my Bettas have Come from being Kept in Small Tanks with Danios or Tetras Or Divided Tanks. So they have become Accustomed to the Smaller Living Quarters. To say that Alll the Bettas have Preffered Small Containers is True.

I have Housed them in the Main tank and they have hated it. Tooo Much Movement and No space To Make Nests.

I have Tried them in Hex's and, The Same they have hated it, and have stayed sulking in a corner.

Housing them in the Small Divided Tanks has worked best for me. Always Active as they have Neigbours, No Other Fishes Swimming Past.

The New Guys are small Anyway and they Are very Active in these Jars. If they were to stay at teh LFS kept with other fish, they would be so stressed and die. As Bettas are Raised on their own, and have no experience of Living in big open expanses of Water.

About the Plants in their Jars. I have No Idea what they are, But they were on sale for £2.00 a Pot and are Suitable for Indoor and OUtdoor. They are Very Delicate and the Fish Love swimming around in the Hanging Roots.

The Issue of heating them is Simple. Ok So the Water Does cool a Little after I turn the Lights off @ 11.00pm. But we have Central Heating, so its never been an Issue. Most of the Fish I have Bought have come from Unheated Tanks Kept @ Room Temperature.
If Heating is a Big Issue to you, Personally, then Purchase A Vivarium Heating Mat. That will Solve It.

Sorry for the Long Post, But you Guys Have been Very Busy.

The Floating Plants are Called - Azola

Pic of Mrs Red, showing Me her Horizontal Stripes, Just took away the Screen to see If she will do her Little Dance. But She did Not.

Sorry lads but i think thats cruel, those jars are tiny, i wouldn't put fry in them.
Do you leave the lamps on all night? otherwise the water would get cold especially in the winter
I agree. And psgill00, I would hardly call 3 litres a "big open space".

Not to mention the minimalist look. No room to swim and nothing to play around with or hide behind.

Also, what about things getting into the open-top from the atmosphere? Doesn't it cause a film over the water with there being no surface movement?

Nope, Never Had any Film Develop on the Surface of the Water.

Don't Care if Others Think It is Cruel.

Mine have Never shown Any Signs that they do Not like their Spaces, and Are Very Happy and always build Massive bubble Nests.

It Works for Me.

I am Going to Make some Shot Glass Caves for them, with some Gravel and Plants Glued to them. I have Not added anything to their jars yet, as I wanted them to settle Properly B4 Changing Anyhting Round.

Being A Little Presumptous Weren't You.

Not really.

If anything, you could be called presumptous for 'knowing' they are fine. If everyone didn't care what others though then people would still be keeping balas in 10 gallon tanks.

It's only my opinion, I am entitled to voice it. I think a litre of water is an appauling amount of water to keep a fish in. Betta or otherwise, it's not like they are exactly small fish either.

They may not like big spaces but I do not think that grants the right for them to be put into that small a space. I think 2.5 gallons is small but it's big enough for them.
