hi all,
ive recently been given a 55g tank and as the topic says i want to set up a South American cichlid tank but im limited with the fact i have soft acidic water.
i dont want to have to get RO so am looking for suggestions with the water conditions i have
thanks all..

Crushed coral would buffer your water up where it needs to be. Thats what I use, I just put a bag in one of the filter I have running on mine. As for your water changes, you could add bi carbonate soda to if before adding it to your tank, that would bring it up. I am no expert tho and there might be better ways.

are there many /any that do well in acidic(6.5)and soft water?

As far as i know, only the dwarf cichlids would be ok in low PH. you can get some really beautiful rams, but if you want bigger cichlids you would need to buffer your water. You might want to put a post in the cichlids section on the forum cus the guys in there will be able to help you more. :good:

Thats actually perfect for mouth south american cichlids. Theres two ways you could go with a 55g and few dwarf cichlids and some tetras, corys ect or a larger pair of cichlids either on there own or with a few dithers. For the dwarf you could have Dwarf pike, Keyholes, Apistogramma, Dwarf acara, Checkerboards ect. for a larger pair Rainbow cichlids, Firemouths, HRP, T bar cichlids ect.

Yeah both are stunning fish especially when breeding. A pair of either a small group of a larger type of Tetra and maybe even a group of Hatchets would work.

Just real quick, RO is for making hard, alkaline water, soft and acidic.

thanks for that, thought it was to neutralize perameters so you could set your own ph levels and hardness with varying inputs of medias
