I Want A Nano.

Okay, thanks everyone. The books I ordered arrived today, so I'll be doing a lot of reading.

Okay, I can't help it, I really want a longspine urchin. I saw a tank at the Baltimore Aquarium that had a Black Longspine Urchin and a bunch of banggai cardinalfish. It was SO cool. What do you think the minimum tank DIMENSIONS are to have a long spined urchin? Would I have to get a custom tank because they grow so... wide?

would you be able to stretch to a 30 gallon? as you sound like you want to try some 'adventurouse' things and the extra room would allow you to have more wiggle rooom

To be honest, after seeing numerous longspines in the ocean that were bigger than my head, I'd say a minimum size of 120 gallons if you want the animal to be able to grow to its fullsize.

EDIT: That's dissapointing. I can't imagine them needing such a big tank, aren't they pretty docile? I know they have to have room to turn around and stuff, but still... :(

They're way docile, but think of it this way. Stick your head inside your tank and see how far you can move it before you run into glass, rocks, etc :(

Lol. But I don't understand, it's not really the height that counts, as long as the tank is over 12 inches tall. It's more of width, since they can get 12 inches all around, right? So if I could get a tank that was 3 feet long, 2 feet wide, and 18 inches tall, that would be sufficient, wouldn't it? Especially if I got a small urchin, so it would have time to grow.

Using the following input parameters
Tank Length = 36 inches
Tank Width = 24 inches
Tank Height = 18 inches

Tank volume is calculated as
Tank Volume = 67.3 Gallons

I'm sure I could think of some way to arrange LR so that it can't be knocked over and that it doesn't take much room. I'm thinking maybe an atoll sort or thing, with large pieces of LR. I'm confident that I could think of something..

listen,You can try to get a large tank for long spine urchin, geta 20g and trim the long spine's spines or get a smaller type of urchin.

Yeah, in most cases its the front-back dimension thats the tough one. A 24" minimum for longterm growth. You could get a custom 36x24x18 or a 36x24x24 89g tank (wish I had one of these...)

And both would be suitable for a long spined sea urchin longterm?
