well i recently changed to sand and bought some live plants and im thinking one of these may be the reason. i found one the other day then it was two yesterday now i found another small baby one..the are small and brown..should i do anything bout it ? im in fear of an explosion now. im up to three in threedays thanks

ugh, snails are nasty. I'd get rid of them. There are some products out there to clear up snails, but these are risky to the fish. If you have no loaches or puffers or something to eat them, your best options are to either add some salt to the water, it kills some snails, or net them out best you can.

Or, get clean saltshakers and put them in the tank, without salt. Maybe put some fish food in them. The shakers, or any other small container like them, can catch the snails only and not your fish.

[i didnt write this] Control through food - Put a small saucer with lettuce or a couple of fish food pellets attached. Dim the lights or turn them off. After a few hours the snails will collect on the saucer and you can remove them. This will not eliminate the snails but can keep the population in check. If you have lot's of bottom feeders this may not work since the bottom feeding fish may devour the food before the snails can get to it. One alternative that I have heard about, but not tried, is to take a 35 mm film cannister and punch holes in the lid. Put the bait in the cannister and then remove after several hours or overnight. This will keep your bottom feeders from eating the bait and the holes will allow the snails to enter.

well i have two kuhli loaches but i guess they arent doing the trick..

also does anyone have an idea on how these snails have now shown up? :-(

The snails definitely hitched a ride with the plants... and I'm also afraid to tell you that there are probably many more than just 3 snails in your tank. Should you get rid of them? Well, that really depends on two things:

a. Do you mind having little holes nibbled in your plants ocassionally?

b. Do you mind having snails crawl all over your tank?

What kind of snails are they? If they are Malaysian Trumpet Snails, they won't touch your plants and will keep your gravel airated and clean of debri! If they are Ramshorns, they will nibble on the plants if you don't keep them well fed, but they do an awesome job of eating leftover fish food.

Now, if you do decide that you want to get rid of them, I would put in a piece of lettuce at night, and remove it (along with the snails attached to it) in the morning. If you repeat this every day, it should either get rid of them completely, or keep the population under control.

kuhli loaches are not botias so they dont love nsials like other loaches do. The best way to get rid of the pests, pond snails, is put lettuce in the tank overnight and in the morining take it out, reeat till all snails are gone.

thanks alot for the answers to my problems..i dont really mind them and my daughter loves to look at the babys..as far as what kind of snails ive looked for photos here but have found none..they are pretty small and brown with a pointed shell..i just wanted to make sure they werent detrimental to the tank or fish,
