Some of you may remember Freaky, my friend's goldfish who got eaten by tadpoles right down to the spine. I took Freaky in and gave her all the care I could. With the result that Freaky made a full recovery. And has left home :shout: She went today :( Not to her original owner, but to a mutual friend who has a lovely garden with a beautiful large pond. So that's all right then - bohoooo!
I never realised that goldfish were like her. I'm very fond of my tropical fish, but they haven't really got the pet factor. Help me- what can I do? My baby's left home. I need your collective shoulders to sob on! That empty tank looks so very- empty. Buying a new goldfish is not on the cards, given that the tank was only 30 ltrs, very much temporary accommodation. And bettas don't live very long. So what can we do? Take to drink? Prop me up everybody!

My absolute sympathy, when I lost my fist two rainbow sharks (they jumped out when I left the tank open for a short while) I cried the whole day. They do become like family. You have perhaps not empty nest syndrome but empty tank syndrome. I'll rather not start crying with you because how are we going to stop then? :shout:

wait... they got eaten by tadpoles?
tadpoles are herbavores and eat only algae.

A pity you weren't there to tell them! It's not the first recorded case of this happening. It's like a herbivore fish, they might well start nibbling on something else that can't get away. The problem here was a small pond with hundreds of tadpoles and nowhere for the fish to escape. My friend caught them at it and there is absolutely no doubt about what was going on.

Thanks for your support, Leeza, it's absolutely empty-tank syndrome.

:( I know what you mean once my fella's dad had a huge Angel, he was about 8 when he died and it was really heart-breaking as we'd grown so attached to him, there was other fish in the tank but it's not the same :(

Aww, you have my sympathy (lends shoulder to cry on) :flowers: .

Goldfish are great, they have to be some of my favorite fish, i totally know where you are coming from with the pet factor thing :good: . Have you considered getting your own pet goldfish? Some of the fancy breeds don't need that larger tank...You know you love'em :D !

but what im saying is they dont have teeth, the worst they could do is suck the slime coat off they couldnt get past the scales. they couldnt physcaly kill the fish, it might have died and started to decompose, that way they could get into the skin.

But the fish didn't die, it made a full recovery.

I know how you feel dwarfgourami. Goldfish are lovely pets. I wish I could keep some again but just don't have the space for a big enough tank

Did they not teach you in infants school that tadpoles have teeth? You should go back and complain!

And yes, the lower part of the back, next to the tail, was eaten away right down to the vertebrae of the spine. The fish recovered because goldfish are INCREDIBLY tough. This was kind of the message in my thread, that I was impressed by this fish because goldfish are so amazing.

Afishdude, are you aware that tadpoles are cannibalistic? Hm.. i guees that means they are all plants, then, if they are herbivores.

they are not canibalistic. they might eat a dead one as all animals on the planet will eat another dead animal.

They are cannibalistic.

Actually, when tadpoles reach the leg stage they become carnivorous.

Which means they would eat goldfish. :good:

Btw, carnivorous means meat eater, incase you didnt know. ;)

wait a minute.............

a tadpole ate a goldfish, or was it a renegade group of tadpoles?

they nibbled on a dead or dying goldfish i guess

sorry for the loss and grief
