then along comes a hedgehog and beats the bear who had the dog for lunch, who had chased off the rat, who gave the porcupine rabies, who stole the cougers hat, who swam to the other side of the pond to eat the fish, who were eating the radioactive snails, who were fighting the alien kung fu algaes who came from the cities water supply, where the Herron started this long complicated attack on the human mind. ( Did I foget anything )

Sorry I've most likly had too much caffinee again. I'm going back to my padded room with the self hugging jacket again. Maybe the nurse will bring me my meds...NURSE!!!!!

Its easy to solve, we have a fake heron up by the pond. The real ones wont come near it now :D
Oh, it serves as a scarecrow, then?

That's a good idea!
In my experience this is a myth, I have seen very sociable herons and once back in ireland saw a small lake surrounded by no less than 20 herons!! Fortunately there were no goldfish in it!! :)

I think that depends, when you have a rich source of food they dont compete

However a small resource rich area is well sought after and will be fought over :)

A nice big fake heron stops this in my experience. My grandfather uses square netting and a fake heron on his pond, and he has some very expensive fish that grow happily without herons getting in the way.

The other thing that you can use is a Japanese bird scarer.

Its a bambo tipping sturcture that takes a small feed from your pump and fills a tube which tips over every 30 seconds or so to make a nice clanking noise.

The best defence is a combination of these things.

We use the bird scarer and the fake heron. My grandad the fake heron and netting. We dont lose any fish :)

is it warm enough to put piranhas in your pond?

it surprises me that so many fish-lovers would be so ready to harm a wild bird. if you want to keep your fish safe, keep them indoors where you can control the environment...

Yeah, I'm with noop. I don't understand how any person compassionate for animals would go straight to "SHOOT THE #$(*&(% THING!!!".... that's insane.

PS:
the fish should be able to move a lot faster than the dog or you could get a bear to fight off the dog
