I just seen a shocking video

In nature, they're cowards. They don't go after anything that fights back and will only eat dead or so near death, it can't fight back food. The Discovery Channel, National Geographic Channel, Animal Planet and a number of other educational channels can't be wrong. :D

The only time they go ballistic on anything is after the big draughts that happen every year. They get stuck in these little puddles of water for a while and the ones who don't starve to death are hungrier than hell when the rains come back and the creeks and streams flow again. They are very cool fish in my opinion.

While I'm undecided (will need to see the video first)

I'd like to point out that large fish (includeing cichlids) are naturally the largest part of a pirahnas diet.

i just gave them a peiceof my midn alright :grr:

and they shouldnt have made fun of you and your g/f eaither Vip

this really is the friendliest forum around

I've said it before and I'll say it again Pirahna keepers can be down right wierd.

As to P's eating people there are many cases of it happening. Locals in pirahna infested areas won't enter deep still water for feer of getting bitten or eaten and many early westerners met there end at the jaws of pirahnas, heck I think it was way back in 1935 some 300 people were eaten by a shoal of P's after a steam boat capsized. Pirahnas are not gentle fish and they arent just viscious when really hungry (even when fed mostly dead things a pirahna in a tank will eat a live feeder if it can even when they are well fed)

Just wondering if P's really do react like they do in the Bond movies??

Also anyone know anyone that keeps P's thats been bitten? Maybe had a finger taken off??

Edit - Spelling!

Just attempted to watch the vid...got halfway and stopped. A guppy gets a quick death, that oscar was getting bit for a good 15 minutes

Whichever way you look at it, it's only a fish. I would never do it, but it doesn't have the same capabilities of pain association as a mammal.

I am sickened, however by these tales of feeding live mammals to snakes and lizardswhen there is no need for it.

rabbits and mice to snakes and other reptiles, or feeding live food to your fish is neglible...

Mammals should be killed before they are fed to snakes. Thankfully, in all my practical experience they have been.

By the looks of that Oscar, it wasnt that big and that guy was basicly tired of taking care of it. We should take him and stick him in the prison showers with his hands cuffed to his ankles and see how he likes those odds. Thats basicly it. Thats what it would be like in the human world. Or it would be like bringing a stick to fight a gang with switch blades, pipes, and chains. I agree with Vip's girlfriend. That guy needs a life and serious profecional help.

Why should mammals be any different from fish? In the wild there is nobody around to mercifully kill a mouse when a snake comes along and decides to swallow it whole. I do agree with you that I think live animals shouldn't be fed to other animals... but why make the distinction between mammals and other animals? What makes mammals so special that they deserve to be treated in this way? IMO all animals are equal (except humans, we rule :p ) and should be treated as such.

EDIT: Can I have the link to this video, I would like to see it for myself.

All I'm saying is that it doesn't seem right to put a perfectly healthy animal which has an otherwise potentially long and fulfilling (reproductively speaking) life ahead of it into an environment in which it is fated to a certain doom - due to the environmental constraints it has no chance to escape being killed and eaten. I have no problem with animals being killed and eaten in the wild, because they have had a fair chance to make their getaway and live to pass on their genes... but it doesn't seem fair to do what we are doing to feeder fish, mice, rats, etc.
