General tanks - There are dead fish in evey tank, often being eaten by their tank mates. They are always sick with something whether it is ich, fungus, colomanaries, fin rot, or something else. On one occasion, i saw probably 30+ dead fish in one tank. The employee they have for the "Pet Department" can hardly speak english, so there is no chance of her educating customers. I once asked her if there were any more thermomiters in the back, and she handed me an alge magnet.
Bettas - The fish are in horrible water, which obviously never gets changed. Most of the Bettas have fin rot, some are on the edge of death. I saw some betta pellets left in one cup, so they may get fed occasionally. One of the ones I got could not reach the top of his cup for air.
Yesterday I bought two from walmart, one decent looking one, and one as a rescue mission. Their water was so bad, i felt the need to change it before the 40 min drive home. No employee was around, nor did one come after beign paged. After 15 minutes of waiting, I decided to take measures into my own hands, and looked for dechorinator in their cabinet. When none was avaliable I took some off of the shelf, and cleaned their water myself. I talked to an assistant manager before checking out, telling her of the horrid water conditions, and told her about my cleaning process. She said she would go and check the betta's water and get the pet person to clean their tanks. Both bettas I got have fin rot. The rescue mission one could barely swim, and had trouble reachign the surface even in 1.5 inches of water. He could barely move his back end, he was that weak. His tail anal fin looks like it was partially cut off (straight across, kinda like Lucky's, but not as close). The manager gave me this fish for free.
The assistant manager and the employee who checked me out both told me they wished they would just get rid of the fish section, since it is nothing but trouble, and all the fish end up dying. I even had a 10 yr old warn me not to buy a betta here, but to go across the parking lot to petco.
