I made a complaint call last night to a WalMart store in New Hampshire. The manager I spoke to told me that in addition to complaining to stores directly, I should call the home office. I plan to, but I want to do something on a very large scale that will hopefully make an impact.

SO......

I want you to send me your WalMart info - I don't want stories, just a few lines about how your WalMart is, GOOD OR BAD, and then list the city and state, with the phone number, if possible. And then specific cases you discovered as far as bad conditions for them - and it doesn't have to be just bettas.

AND THEN, if you have fish that were sick or had major problems that came from WalMart, and you happen to have a picture of it, please attach it to your post. I am going to type up a report, include specific store names, dates, small summaries of the story, and include photos of the fish. I will then send the entire thing off to the home office of WM.

Please help me so we can collectively help the fishes. Thanks in advance! :)

PS - EVEN if you've posted somewhere else, and/or I have made a call for you, please re-post your info here so i have it all in one spot. Thanks.

Well, my Wal*mart is Wal-Mart Supercenter Store #605, located in Savannah, GA. The bettas always look remarkably well cared for, but the other fish.... The tanks always seem clean but there are TONS of dead fish. Last time there was at least ten deadies being picked at by their peers. *shivers*
Good luck with the crusade!

Bettamomma, I don't shop at WalMart, but we have one about 15 miles away. I'd be happy to provide the info for you (addy, phone #) if you want, but I'm not too familiar with the fish situation - I know they have them, but I only went in there once. The time I went in, I saw dead fish in nearly every tank. That was a long time ago, though - my info's not current. Let me know if you want the store info anyway.

I'd love it! Thanks :)

Nye he he:) This is the kind of thing I love. Humiliating the big companies, giving them stark facts they can't lie to you about, trapping them in a corner... And very therapeutic too :)

Yep. Me TOO.
Besides, I need something to keep me occupied while I put my 40 hours in at the office..

lol :)

There you be! Good luck.

Egad, where do I start? Every time I go into my Wal-Mart, and I mean EVERY time, there are at least ten dead fish, usually several in every tank. The bettas are always in various stages of problems. A lot will have finrot, some will be okay, but have dirty water with gunk floating on the bottom. I've seen a dead one once or twice. One very recently (2 days ago) and another on the same day that looked pretty ripped up. I couldn't get him then, but if he's still alive today, I'm taking him home. The dead one looked like it had been there for a while since the water was a cloudy yellow.

Once, they got a shipment of dragon fish that died in less than a week. There were probably about twelve of the fish and I don't think they sold ANY of them. There is almost never anyone in the pet area, unless it's someone stocking dog food or something, and they never know anything about the fish. They're just stockers.

The betta cups are almost always stacked so that the bettas on the bottom can't breathe. The only time they aren't, is if there aren't enough bettas to be stacked. Once, there were tons of bettas there and when we went back again, probably 3/4 of them were gone. I didn't ask where they went and I'm sure they weren't sold.

We have one betta that we got there. When we got him, most of his tail was lost to fin rot and his water was the color of weak tea. His conditions were horrible.

The regular tanks always have algae on them and dead fish. I have seen bettas housed in the regular tanks with no care for the species they are put in with. I think there are worse Wal-Mart's out there, but this one looks pretty bad most of the time.

Hmm...I hadn't realized how bad it was until I wrote all that down. I think I may have to call them and make a complaint. The store# is 2978 in Fort Worth, TX. This is probably the same store that wuv talks about a lot. I've checked the other store nearby on Hulen, but they don't have bettas and their fish section actually looked pretty nice. Of course, I didn't get a real close look and I don't shop there much. Also, the lights were out for the night, which is actually a good thing. I don't think the Wal-Mart near me EVER turns the lights out on their tanks, no matter if it is night or not. Probably the reason they have algae problems...

Things I have noticed in the past:
A LOT of dead goldfish
Bettas in poor condition
Goldfish with bad swimbladder problems. -an oranda that looked dead and floating was actually alive.

Recently I had gone and there was a betta with an Ick infestation and finrot. He had no meds whatsoever in his cup.
I dislike how they have them in larger cups, but they don't have the cups full of water, half-way or less is the usual song.
They have a betta in a bowl with one of those plants, the roots are long and cumbersome.
They had several betta boys that looked like they had been in fights, their fins were dramatically shorter, some looked a little 'scruffy' but a couple had started healing up some.

The last time I had gone in and bought a fish, the gen. manager came over and asked the person in the pet section 'are the fish still alive?' And I was nearby...give me a break. Tell those pricks if they don't give a d*mn about the fish, just stop selling them. Granted I'll be out of a place to 'save' fish and would have to go to Lacrosse, but still. IF they continue to sell fish, please take care of them as you would any other product in the store. More profit would be made with excellently cared for fish. *I'm making up words, lol :p * The better looking the fish, the more people would buy...for example, when I went that day, a woman came over and asked if the 'fish were fresh' Obviously she knows from past experiance the later you get there to purchase fish after they've been shipped, the cr*ppier they are.

For goldfish, I do not believe 'pond koi' regardless of how small they are, should be kept with the wee fancy goldfish. I've read in several forums, fancies should not be kept with comets, commons, and koi. At least they didn't have the koi in the bubble-eye/oranda tank.

One time there was a poor oranda in the tank, his dorsal fin was gone *from how, not sure* and you could see the little bones. Week after week he got fungus, he even had mouth fungus too. Do you think he was medicated? No. I would've bought him but I had no place to put him...and I was sick of my own fish deaths I didn't want to get a 'lost cause' but if I did have room at that time, I would've anyway.

The cups haven't been TOO dirty, but still, they take poor care of any fish. :X

edited because I can't spell...

the walmart i go to is in blaine, minnesota. they are pretty good, cept the fish only last for about 1 1/2 years, which sorta suck...

The walmart that I bought 2 of my boys from is:

Store #3064 - Oakville Ontario - Canada
905-257-5740
Store manager - Randy Powers

The experience that I have had with this walmart is that there female bettas seemed sick and were in with the angels. Some of the females were stuck to the filter, some were dead on the ground, one even was missing her back tail...

The male bettas wernt in very much water. Another time I was there there was only one betta left whos water was filthy and only half of his back tail was left. I started to look for the stuff to change his water but couldnt find any. A lady than came into the department and I made her change the water and stood there while she did it. She also told me that people come into the department and dump bettas into each others cups.... I said if someone was always in the department that wouldnt happen....

The goldfish were in the worst conditon. They were covered with ick... Just covered...

Hope this helps :)

ah yes, i just went to walmart today, looking at the living conditions of the fish, could make me sue them, but i can't cause i don't even have a drivers licence. i mean it, over half of the male bettas were dead, and they were just floating in the tank, and the fish people didn't seem to care. i'm not buying there anymore, just my two lfs, petsco and pets mart. that's it.
