I Couldn't Help It!

What if the other fish ate his dorsal fin? o_O
Now that I look back at the first picture, yeah seems like it was the dorsal fin that was eaten... Which means that there still might be a chance for it to grow back if it wasn't completely destroyed. It needs to have at least the base spines left I think.
My hoplo didn't have it too torn, just a piece where the betta nipped. (that was what angered me when it came to bettas, aside for finding a bunch of zebras without eyes).

I've looked at some of the pictures in this catalogue! You may have more luck comparing them with your fish!

It is quite a long list though! :)

wow that list was long. I didn't get through all of it. The picture that I posted earlier is the closest picture I have found that looks like him. Cited here http://markuswahl.com/mediawiki/index.php/Akvaristik
I almost went to walmart again just to ask the guy there what fish I had bought yesterday. I dont think that he will forget me because of the way I acted.........

EDIT-ish: I found it! he isnt a Loricariidae, he is a Synodontis euptera. Link below.

So happy to know that you think that it may grow back. If not, he seems to be swimming fine without it. And he is defiantly happier than he would have been.
Still Swimming!

Ah, yes see, I was confused by its markings. The one in the picture has dots as opposed to yours that has spots that are irregular.

It would be nice for him if he could heal and have all his body parts back. But if he is so damaged that it won't grow back, if he at least survives that would be absolutely amazing. He's a cutie no matter what, and he will be even more special to you since you saved him.

That was terribly irresponsible of the person who placed him in this tank at the store. I'm so sad, and mad that this is so poorly regulated.

This reminds me of the old fish sales they used to do back in the days. They had a SMALL aquarium FULL of Betta fish (males, females, all there) and the fish were trying to jump out of the water. They were tiny, but still could see they were confused.
No wonder the police wiped out everything that was going on there few years ago.

yeah, it is sad when pet stores dont know about the fish which they are selling, then they are telling their customers incorrect information which kills all their fishy friends. really sad and frustrating when as a customer you have to correct the fish store.

Well just an update. Leckles is still swimming around. His back has healed (the dorsal fin hasn't grown back yet, but we think that it will. He already has a little nub that wiggles back and forth whenever he swims. :hyper: ) I'm doing daily partial water changes as every time I check the ammonia levels it is at 1.00-4.00ppm. (If anyone has help with keeping ammonia levels down without a chemical, that would be great.) Next weekend we are moving him into my community tank with Tiger Barbs and Rosy barbs and Kuhli Loaches as the tank which he is in is way too small for him.
Good idea?

I don't know about compatibility with the barbs, but if that tank has less ammonia than his tank it would help with the healing of his wounds, and keeping him from getting sick! That ammonia is way too high!!! It is not safe to have readings of ammonia higher than .25!!!

Maybe you could/should move him already this weekend if there is no compatibility problem!

Yeah I know it is really high. That is why I am doing daily partial water changes (75%-ish).
I hope that he will be okay with the Barbs, he is a fish that is "Okay to be with Chicilds"
-Which I do believe, but just not in Walmart without any hiding places. ( I have four caves in my main tank)

Do you know if Leckles will perk up if I place him into the main tank? He seems really lonely and crammed into the small tank, could ammonia levels do that too? I keep my main tank at 0ppm ammonia, and if it isn't I do a 25% water change.

I wanted to move him today, but as there are barbs in the tank we wanted to be sure that his fin has completely healed over. He is just starting to gain the color back, but the skin is healed, so I Dont know if that counts as completely healed. Doesn't wounds increase the ammonia levels in a tank anyways?

He might manage to re-grow it. Would be cool.
Hope he will like the other tank. Good luck to the both of you.

I read that the Featherfin Squeaker is compatible with Rosy Barbs, you'll have to see how the Tiger Barbs are with him. He's also supposed to be OK with Kuhli Loaches.

Wounds will heal slower if ammonia is present. I don't think they increase the ammonia in the water. But adding him to your main tank may increase the bioload somewhat, so you will want to check if there is a small ammonia spike until the bacteria had a chance to catch up with the higher load.

That he is more sluggish is most likely caused by being in a toxic environment. Those high levels can cause him to suffer organ damage. I would move him to your other tank and observe how the Tiger Barbs get along with him. Maybe you want to start a new thread with this question to hear more opinions on this particular compatibility?! If there is an issue and they don't get along, you could try seeding his filter with media from your main tank to help increase the bacteria in his filter. That should keep those ammonia readings down!!! Either add some of the filter from your main tank to his filter, or rinse the filter of the main tank in front of the intake valve of his filter in his tank.

I'm so glad he is healing, you're awesome! :hyper:

You may want to look into a good diet for him. I have quite a few of these little guys and they are great little cats, but your is looking very skinny compared to what I have seen. With good diet, clean water, and lots of love he should heal up very nicely for you.

That was an awesome thing you did saving that poor fish.

Unfortunately I don't think Featherfin Squeakers are compatible with Tiger Barbs, according to this site anyway:

http://www.tropicalfishandaquariums.com/compatibility/MatchResults.php

Read the second section, just enter the 2 fish you want to compare and they'll tell you if they'll work or not. This site does err on the side of very safe..................

Featherfin Squeaker... now that definitely makes me think of a mouse. Well, most catfish do. X) Or rabbits.

Oh wow! Thanks on the common name. When he jumped out of my tank my roommate said he didnt squeak and I knew that he did. +1 for me!!

I'm finding very mixed information on the featherfin. Anyone know possible reasons as to why I cant place him into my main tank? I've read things from...
-are not social creatures will eat others if more than one is in a tank
-will die if alone super social creatures
-tiger barbs will leave him alone
-he will eat tiger barbs

Thanks Rummy, I honestly couldn't have done it without you guys. I was sure that I was going to move him soon, but because he may get eaten again by the tiger barbs or may eat the tiger barbs, I want to look into it a bit more, just incase the water changes are helping and it is just because he is in a tiny tiny tiny tank, with no filter....

Dieses: I've stalked a few of your posts about these little guys while doing my research. That was the day after I got him from Walmart, so I am not surprised that he was looking a little skinny. I'll have to take another picture as an update for you guys. I was actually worried the third of fourth day about his weight, meaning that I over fed him and that was why he was so mehhh...

I have three and they are chubby little thing! But they are a lot of fun to watch. And I can tell you from experience that they ARE social, and you will see them more moving around the tank when they have buddies. Mine is a lot more social now that he has some friends. I do not see why they wouldnt get along with tiger barbs though. Mine get along with convicts and oscars!!
