Hullo! Brand new to forum, wanna see my first tank? Suggestions welcome!

Beautiful planted tank!! Welcome to TFF! :D :hi:
Thank you kindly! Love the ram in your profile photo, such stunning fish. I'm not experienced/knowledgeable enough to have any yet, but they're on my list of fish to have one day. First time I saw them in my LFS, I kept coming back to them, they're so beautiful under good lights.

May I ask about your profile pic? Is that a Betta in a hide? I'm planning a Betta tank next, and was wondering about hides.

Yes, that's my betta, Mooki, in his temple. He also has two clay pots in his tank. The most important thing you have to consider when you are putting hides into a betta tank, is that they can't have any sharp edges. Betta's fins are very long and delicate, and they can rip easily.
Here is a picture of my set up. It's kind of an old photo, but you can kind of get the idea. I have the big pot, but you v=have to make sure the hole is buried in the substrate. Then I have the temple, which my betta loves. It has lots of holes in it that he can swim through, and there is any area behind it where he can hid if he wants to. Under the temple there is another clay pot. It's a really small one that has a flat part. I set the temple on the flat part, and partially buried the curved part. He likes to go into there too. Bettas like tight spaces for some reason.

He's so beautiful! I really appreciate this, thank you. I'm planning the tank now, but not rushing to put it together or get the betta yet, since I want the set up to be perfect, and I haven't had a betta before, but I know there's a lot of misinformation about them out there. Wanted to learn a lot more before finally getting one. this forum will help a lot. I do know that I want a blue one though! Most of my guppies are shades of blue too, and I recently got some blue platies, I just seem to be drawn to blue fish, lol.

I'm planning to get some large leaved plants like a decently sized anubius and sword, since I know they like to rest on leaves, and have some resting spots near the surface. Plus floating plants. But I only saw someone mention a hide recently, and wasn't sure what they meant. Haven't read about them liking hides and tight spaces before, so that's awesome, and you've helped me plan a better betta abode!

I would love a 20 gallon long, they're beautiful for aquascaping, and I'd really love a school of panda cories at some point too. I do keep an eye out on adverts where people are selling aquariums, but it isn't the type of tank that turns up often, sadly. I'll see what turns up! I'd be very happy with a 30-40 gallon, if I can fit it in. Hmm, time to measure!
Someone on here giving away a Juwel 260, needs picking up from Nottingham...

Oh wow, that's a gorgeous tank! That's incredibly generous for that person to give it away, what a gift that is to whoever gets it. Thank you for letting me know!

Crikey, tank of the month? Mine is only 14-15 gallons though. I'll be browsing everyone else's tanks though!

Hi,
Firstly your tank is amazing a masterpiece !
Could you give me some tips on making a tank like that? I would really like to make some along the lines of that one .

Regards Tom

Far from a masterpiece, but thank you so much! I don't even know what some of the plants in my tank are, lol. I like to have an overgrown, jungle sort of look, but the tank is due for a trim and tidy up.

Since I'm a beginner too, I can't really help that much I'm afraid, but I will help where I can! Do you have a tank already? What you do for substrate, hardscape and planting really depends on what fish you're planning to keep. E.g if you want to keep corydoras or loaches, they really need a sand substrate, while a betta fish can't have items with sharp edges in the tank that would tear their fins, so that affects what wood and decor you choose for the tank. If you wanted goldfish, they would eat the plants I have in my tank. I knew I'd be keeping guppies, cherry shrimp, and otos, so I wanted dense planting, and plants that are good for fry and baby shrimp to hide in.

So start with which fish you'd like to keep, then research what they need, and how they would live in the wild, then try to replicate that as much as possible. Browse lots of different tanks, and see what really grabs you, and make a list. Like white or black sand? Lots of rocks? Dramatic wood piece? Cultivated garden like tank, or untamed jungle? See what grabs you and if it'll work with the fish you want. Hope that helps!

(Apologies for multiple postings, haven't used a forum in a while, will remember to multi-quote next time.)

Welcome, nice tank, love the plants:wub:
Thank you kindly! I'm addicted to getting more and more aquatic plants, it's becoming quite the habit. Always room for another one!
In that case please enter the September contest featuring tanks sized at 16 US gallons or smaller.
I appreciate that, thank you. Gives me some time to prepare, work on aquascaping and making mine award worthy, muhahaha! ;)

I know the feeling after many years of only having plastic plants:dunno: I now only have live plants, I just bought 3 more today for my tetra tank.

They are beautiful, but from what I hear they can be very sensitive to water parameters. They require a low pH and warm water. They require warmer water Temperatures than the other fish I wish to keep, so maybe some day I will set up another tank for warmer water fish.
