How to get rid of fine particles ?

If I were to order craft stuff to replace my filter do I have to take the current cartridge apart off the frame then fold it over and put a elastic or something and keep it in the tank ?
You can take the old foam out and stuff it in the filter with the new media until bacteria is well established. After a few weeks, I would pitch it.

Get Batting, not Fill, don't ask me how I know ;)

Idk exactly what this is but it was like $2
That is your ceramic bio-media - Keep it, in the bag if possible (make filter cleaning easier), put it last in the water flow as you don't want it to gunk up.
Also I have more of the filter sponge I only cut a small section.
Perfect, you can use that with having to buy any. It doesn't have to be in one piece.

This can be controversial, but when cleaning I would rinse all your filter media in tank water siphoned into a clean (NO SOAP) fish only bucket. At water changes I usually only change the poly batting and clean the pre-filter, unless the sponges are gunked up.
I use the tank water for houseplants when done.

If you get a pre-filter, cover with a plastic bag before removing to contain particles, then squeeze rinse in bucket.

Here is my setup, ceramic on top, poly below, and below that is the sponge.

Once a week (when I can, I'm tied up at work so tomorrow will be 12 days). For your tank, $5-6 dollars (one roll) will last for many months. I use 4, 4"x10" rectangles. I figure I can get about 8-10 changes with that. I could stretch it further and not replace each change, but it is SO cheap.
