Does black gravel cause "freckle" or make discus darker?
I want to use black substrate

Fish generally feel more comfortable in tanks with a dark substrate and will show better colours when happy and relaxed. So a brown or black substrate will usually improve a fish's colour. You should also have a dark picture on the back of the tank and some plants to make them really happy.
