Hi,

We have a 17 gallon tank with quite a few plants and hidey holes for fish. Currently cycling, how many fish should we aim for?.

Thanks

That all depends on the dimensions of the tank (L x W x H)
And on the kind of fish you wish to keep.
As a rule of thumb it's one inch per U.S. gallon or 0.74cm of fish per liter.
This is a guide only and can be added to with tank maturaty, additional filtration and good surface movement (increases surface area).

Thanks. We like Angel Fish but I've heard they are quite difficult to mix with other fish?. What do they mix well with?.

Angels need a tall tank, at least 18" I think but you'd need to check, I would suspect your tank is too small for them. Search for Angels on here and on Google and see what you can find out.

Angels are not realy a good choice for a 17 gallon tank. They grow too large and, as already mentioned, need a tall tank. You must remember to calculate the fish your tank can hold using the adult sizes. However, if you were to add angels, good tankmates would be corydoras catfish and some larger tetras in a shoal. Avoid smaller fish like neon tetras or cardinals as they will eventualy become lunch. I think your tank would be better off with a few danios or tetras, a couple of dwarf gouramies and some cories but that's just my opinion. If you have harder water, get some livebearers... ;)

Thanks - think we will start with Danios for the first few weeks to see how we get on and then become more adventurous - will report back then and hopefully move onto the next stage....many thanx.

Zebra danios and leopard danios need at leat a 24" tank length, due to their
high level of activeness. Also you need to conside that the minium group is 5.

in a 17 gallon tank you could have dwarf or glowlight danios as they are not as active nor do they get as big as ZD & LD's. Again both need to be in groups of 5 or more.
