Do not add loaches as they get stunted or get big. Ask the experts in the forum.
that was too vague of you, the OP has a selection of loaches that are sutiable for there tank size IE chain and khuli loaches.

Got to agree that bala sharks are not really good idea for a tank of your  size.

If not already suggested maybe you could have a pair of discus fish, perhaps 5 to 6 might be better, they would look really good and have read its possible to be kept with platies, cories, rams and some species of tetras. Need to do a bit more research but you get the general idea.

My suggestion might be a shoal of 10 cardinal tetras (tank needs to be least 6 months established), but if you get adult discus then the tetras may be tasty treats to them, starting with juvenile discus might be better, 4 otos and 4 khulli loaches.

heck no that tank is way to small for a pair of discus IMO 55 gallon some say is possible but remeber they like groups and they need a big tank size for that. Not to mention there specialist water quality needs which is reccomended that they only be with fish that there with in the wild and not all cories tertra etc. can be housed with them because of this.

Hmm seems my research into this was misguided as I gathered from internet searches that some said that 10g per discus would be ok and 250 litres is about 60 US gals so I thought a pair discus could work but needed lots of water changes and careful water care, hence why said a bit more research would be needed.

Good to know though for future reference.

yeah but some say a pair of discus isnt as good as a school of them because of them being social fish, but i just think the tank is too small.

Good to know as would not mind having discus fish in future (distant future!) in a large 500 litre tank or something like that if get a big enough house! lol

yea alot of people want them including myself, but there specialty fish and have different needs and if you ask me a bit pricey.

Yeah, saw an established breeding pair in lfs recently and was £155 so not the cheapest!

This is way into the future for me though, have only just started out in this and have an awful lot to learn! Like not recommending a pair of discus fish for 250 litre tanks.......

now I am confuse with you. I do believe it was you that said I cannot replace my loach that died due to ick in my 55 gal over a week ago. Correct me on this. Didn't you mention that it get stunted in the tank?
mmmmmmmmmm my 55 gal show a ph of 9. Mostly its my well water that is slightly high in the range of 8.0 -9.
most of the fish are doing ok.

your loach was unsuitable for your tank size however im not reccomendeing a clown loach but khuli or chain loaches.

I've also been thinking into plecs but are there any sort of smaller species of plec that don't grow as big as the common plecs like 50 cm plus?

bushynose and rubberlip pleco are afffordable small plecs but theres also the clown pleco, a stunning speciemen.

Whiptail plecos, bristlenose, candy plec, clown plec, or can I suggest sturisoma or ottos? SAme family technically.

OK ncguppy, yes my clown loach which we did talked about it as I was thinking of replacing him. Thank you. I will look into a diff loach.
