Hope I don't offend anyone...

Well I have an 18” long pochoo if you want it. I’m in VA and would love to have my 220 back to use for something different. He’s almost 3 I think and I would love to do something different with his tank but where else do you put a big fish like that?

All this talk about only buying fish that will fit your tank fully grown 5 years down the track is a little pointless?.

Why?
I was just thinking that if noone ever bought a fish that would eventually outgrow the owners tank, then where would someone go to buy a larger/older fish? I mean, are there breeders out there with 10,000 gal tanks with schools of large fish, fed and looked after for how many years and ready for sale? even if there were bet they would cost a bomb! or is that the idea?

IE if no fish keepers have fish that will outgrow their tanks then the breeders can rake in the cash on large fish sales

hey morgan, mrv if you dont mind me asking, what goes on with you two? you both joined about the same time and your both from finland, and you both have your sites hosted at the same server...... you two on here from work or something?

I don't like the idea of getting rid of fish, it doesnt seem right unless u can guarentee it's going to a good place, i.e. by giving it to a friend with a tank that you know will accomodate them.

I do see exception when it comes to newbies buying fish on bad advice or just lack of knowledge. What irks me is when the experienced fish keeper buys a fish knowing full well that they will eventually get rid of it.

Um, as far as I know there's nothing going on with us two. We don't know each other outside this forum. MrV actually joined a year before me. As far as the server goes, it's a very common one in Finland because it's free. ;)

'gulp' I work in a lsf (dont string me up!!) and i have to say that we get at least 2 fish per week that have grown too large for peoples tanks, a couple days ago we had a bloke bring in 5 oscars because he wanted a change, which i really cant undersatnd.

last week we had 2 8" plecs, a large gourami, a nice big angel, and another fish (cant remember what) because they simply weren't wanted anymore.

although im not against passing on fish to people you know will house them well or growing fish for later sale, i am against taking them back to your lfs unless you know we can take them, firstly it takes up tank space which we may not have which could force us to put too many fish into a tank for god knows how long untill they sell (too many oscars untill space becomes available!),plus we cant always tell they are going to a good home even though we do try our best to make sure the new owners know how to care for them and have the means to but we cant always say they will care for them well:(.

Luckily the shop owner knows a woman with a positively hooooge tank (not sure how big but by his arm gestures id say about 5'x2'x2') and she is taking the plecs, angel and mystery fish away, but we are still stuck with the oscars and the gourami.

we can normally sell large passive fish easily but oscars and dempseys and the like are a bit trickier (resulting in the shop pet dempsey)

 I am shocked, this is supposed to be a family forum!!!

:p :p :)

Its about as broad as it is long really

Is that the same as "six of one and half a dozen of another" ?

Just curious, as I've never heard the expression before.

I think it would be very helpful for everyone who sells fish to glue a measuring tape onto each tank and clearly state the adult size along with the name and the price. I always look at the adult size when I look at fish at PetSmart because it is right there below the tank, along with the common name, the latin name, the foods eaten, and the disposition (community, aggressive, etc.). No place else I go does that. Some don't even have names on the tank. How do the employees learn about the fish if the names aren't even written down anywhere?
