Hi Kizz

I think I know what you mean about getting the bug.

4 months ago I had a 5ft Malawi tank..........and now...............an MT50 18G in which I have a pair of clowns a cleaner shrimp, snails and hermits..........kept that for a couple of months until my wife said the words "let's get an anenome".........so I ordered a 37x24x24 which arrived Friday (the nano will now be a quarantine tank).......oh and I might have picked up a 60x24x24 last weekend and will convert that to marine at some point........addictive? never :look:

Oh and I almost forgot an old bath with about 100kg of live rock under the stairs being heated, skimmed and circulated.

It is hihgly addictive harry,I remember starting off my first ever tropical aquarium 3 years ago with danio's n guppies ! Think i've pretty much covered all routes except brakish and malawi lol and 100kg of LR wish i could source an amount like that ! lol .

Well pretty much sat up til around 2am which was a very bad idea as was back up at 7am this morning  . After taking on board everything seffie has said i think my first purchase should be the RO unit . with a tank my size tryin to fill it with 25L buckets from lfs is going to take ages ! aswell as many trips in the car ! lol I take it RO-Man is the best ro unit available ? I've been lookin at THIS one . Is this adequate for what i need ? I'm also watching 2 on ebay that are the same spec so might be able to get it a bit cheaper but not too fussed as feel that for £90 for a never ending supply isn't actually that bad

My main question about them is Where do the go ? Do they attach under the sink ? I'm assuming it would be to a washing machine pipe of some sort . Am i right ?

Thanks
Kizz

If you check out my journal HEREthere is some pictures and details of the RO unit I set up last month which may answer some of your questions.

Just found this too. Link to thread about RO unit I got - MY RO UNIT
Its done about 500 litres so far and still showing 001 on the TDS meter.

Thanks for posting that harry . Had a lil look at your journal and as much as i say i'm a "man thinkin woman" that looks like a pile of cables n hoses to me

Does it connect to the CW pipe for washing machine ? I like your idea of having enough hosing to get it on draining board that would be ideal for me aswell waste water down the sink then RO into container on kitchen floor

Think i'm going to have a look for someone setting up a RO unit step by step lol

Thanks
Kizz

When I ordered I spoke to the guy at Vyair who owns the company and he sent me an extra tap and a connector FOC. You need a y-piece for a washing machine outlet (to turn one outlet into 2 and then connect a connector to convert from the washing machine supply down to the little tubing size for the RO unit (supplied by Vyair but you need to ask for it), all the Ro connectors are push fits and the hosing can be cut to length with a stanley knife (kitchen knife sorry that sounded sexist but my wife cuts stuff with a steak knife if she can't find pliers, scissors or a stanley). I had no clue when it came but the instructions were clear and the guy was happy to be phoned should there be any problems. Cant recommend highly enough especially if you want someone to talk to should things go wrong.

Oh and I'm not Harry

Oooops !! lol That's my eye's reading what the want to ready lol ! i thought name was HarryGeorge ! LOL!

Man i feel bad now ! lol think that's twice i called you harry ! lol i'll show this post to my OH when he gets in and he should know what you're on about with the plumbing side . Only reason i'm wondering is if i purchase one of the ones off ebay will i be able to buy the connector from Y pipe for the Ro connection ?

Thanks

PS Had a look at that seller andhave found this. I think a 50gpd output is more than enough for me . The initial fillin of the tank will take a bit of time but i don't think i need output of 100gpd

Also another wee quick question is there a use date of RO water for example if i fill up 2 30-40L buckets how long can i leave them for before mixing salt in ? Only asking in cases where i may need to do emergency water changes at least i know i can have seom ready made RO on hand

And am i correct in thinking that when mixing salt i will need a powerheadto circulate water and heater to bring it up to temp before adding to tank

Thanks

And soem more stuff i've found . Was thinking since i already have 1 T8 on tank (No light unit all through starter's) could i keep the T8 either an Arcadia Marine Blue 30W or Marine White 30W with 2x T5's 39W White Reef 10k and a 39W Blue Actinic 400nm

Does that look ok ? I could possible squeeze i more bulb in there was thinking of maybe 2 white bulbs and 1 blue being the T8 as that runs off a diffrent starter so can keep that on singularly at night

Anyone offer input on this ?

Cheers

Not sure how long tbh (think it's around a month from what I've been told but could be longer if it is kept in dark place and sealed.
As for mixing you will need a powerhead or pump to circulate and help mix the salt and will also need heat.
I bring up to temp first before adding salt with powerhead running. For a 25l container it takes me 4 small glasses of salt to get salinity up to 1.025.

P.s happygeorge is now HARRY George............It's Official! Lol

That's good to know . Can yo0u regulate how much water you take from the RO unit ? So say i wanted to take 5Gallons each day with 2 days off that way i have 25G a week for top up's etc is this feesable ? take it i jsut shut off the RO Unit .

I also seem to be confusing myself a little bit even tho i have thing written down . Do i need a external filter ? Or with LR and skimmer is that the equivelant of having and external filter :S

And one last one for now . If i purchased LR can i keep it stored in containers with a power head n heater til tank is ready ? would this cause a die off ?

Thanks for all responses so far ! Taking everything on board

i shall be watching with interest, as i too want to go marine around 10 months time.
also thanks for the cheap ro unit link  saved in myebay

hope all goes well for you:good:

yet another question  how many months does it take to cure the LR ? was thinking of buying 25KG of ocean rock with 25kg of LR that way i can use the ocean rock as a base as such and build up round it . Would this effect the cycle of tank and would it still pong as much as people say curing does

Thanks Again
Kizz

I wouldnt go the ocean rock road, you can cure your live rock but most rock from a reefer or shop will already be cured, but it si likely to go through a cycle when first in your tank, can be anything from 0 days cycle to a couple of weeks

Seffie x

oh yes, not sure if anyone answered your light question, yes you can do as you suggested

Thanks seffie ! So that's lights a Definate , I've also decided on RO unit from one suggested by "HarryGeorge" lol ! Power heads i was looking at the twin set on ebay for £15 !here

To Cure my own LR what is it that i need exactly ? Is ocean rock the wrong sort of rock ? was reading over woody's thread and assumed that is what was used .I'm just thinkin finacially 64 kg is a hell of a big shell out in one go wouldn't bother me having all equipement and just rock watching and doing water changes .Will have to save to buy first lot of CUC fish corals etc anyway

Also can you shed light on my filter question
