Hi everyone! I'm Kert from NY. I've been following the site for awhile, figured I should join. I want to have an aquarium and I thought it would be great to know more great tips before having one and I want to do it right. I'm planning to take care of few colorful tropical fishes. I want to know, which are the best ones to start with?

Hi Kert, it's great that you're learning as much as you can before you begin. That's a good start!
It depends on what you would like to end up with in your future tank. In general mollys, platys, some corys are hardy enough to begin with. Some find platys and mollys boring so it's a matter of taste. Mine will always come for a nosey if I'm at the tank. They also blend in well in a community tank so you'd have good options if you decide to broaden your horizons and want to add other fish as you gain experience. Keep reading up and it will help you avoid many common start-up mistakes.

There are loads of lovely, hardy tropical fish. Which ones would be best for you depends on the size of your tank and how hard or soft your water is.

The most important thing you need to know about is 'cycling' your tank; that means growing good bacteria in the filter that eat the fish's wastes for you and stops the water going toxic.

There are great articles on cycling in our 'beginner's resource centre'; the link for that is in my sig :)
