how would I go about making a hood and more specifically, what kind of ballasts would I need to use these 2 bulbs. It's just for a spare 5 gallon

you'd probably be better off to just buy one already made for a 5 gallon, unless none made will hold teh bulb your looking at but i just used 1/4" plywood and ran a support along the top edges on the inside and used wood glue and nails to attach the pieces and resin'd the inside to protect it from the water, i'm no help on what ballast you would need though

i followed a post in here when i made mine but i don't know where that post went too :/

You don't need a ballast to run those. Just a regular light socket.

The colors however, may be all wrong. :(

But a 5 gal is certainly limited in what you can use for light.

Thanks for both of your replies. Looks like I won't need a ballast after all so I guess I can follow your advice xXMrBonesXx... :) As for the colour, it won't be a white light but a yellow one instead, and has a Kelvin rating of only 2700K. So should I use these bulbs or get something else? What else could I use in a 5 gallon?

Only reason I'm using those is because I just have them lying around I know how the colour looks like, and my plants grew surprisingly well when I was using the bulbs in my old 10 gallon when I didn't know much about lights. I know that for smaller tanks the WPG rule doesn't work, so now with 30 watts over a 5 gallon that should make for 6 WPG so I think that should be enough for my planned "planted tank" which I plan on getting java moss and java fern for.
