Help. please Goldfish standing on tail

I just set up a bowl at my desk in office with two goldfish, they have been at home that last few days and have been fine. I placed them in the bowl, added slightly warmish water, treated the water with a conditioner, allowed them to adjust in their baggie for a bit and put them in about 2 hours ago. Now one of them is standing on his tail on the bottom popinting straight up! He does occasionally swim around and then goes back to the tail stand. What is this indicative of? And so quickly? Thanks.

mabey you don't have enough oxygen in the bowl, did you try to put 1/3 of their old water in the new bowl, it could be stressed!

Bowls are death traps, I'm sorry to say. Because of their shape, there is not enough surface area to oxygenate the water. If you leave those two goldfish in there, they will sufficate, if they haven't already.

I should warn you that if those are commen goldfish (or any type of goldfish) it will eventualy grow to over a foot long and need a very large tank.

Dixaisy is right--goldfish can't breathe air like bettas can, and without some aeration it's likely they'll croak. As a general rule, a person should have 10 gallons of water per goldfish, and believe me, they'll grow to fit it! Also, goldfish poop like crazy, so a small bowl would become polluted much faster than a bigger one.
But as for your fish's problem, it may be swim bladder injury/disease.

10 gallons of water per goldfish is the rule. They should no way be kept in a bowl. I wish I could help you but I don't know what else to say other them to a bigger tank.

Sorry to tell you but if your two goldfish are still alive your only chance is getting them atleast a real tank..You could get a 10 gallon,but in long runyou would have to buy a larger one,,to save a few dollars buy a 20..Store people try and sell sell sell..But you where told wrong if someone told you you could keep goldfish in a bowl...They grow VERY fast and poop alot,,,Good Luck to you and your 2 fish...

Not true I had a friend with a goldfish of some sort and she kept it in a small tank. It got very large anyway.

Goldfish will only grow as big as the tank they are in.

I have never kept my goldfish in bowls (I spoil the heck out of them), but I have never seen any of mine grow any bigger than what they could withstand in my 85 gallon tank. About 7 inches a piece (some are tiny too). I guess it depends on the goldfish.

Some goldfish stay small in small tanks because they are stunted--obviously this isn't a healthy thing, in the same way that a child would be messed up if he didn't get enough love. For a healthy goldfish, the rule is 10 gal. per fish.

I wasn't disagreeing with anyone here. My experiences were different because my fish were not store bought and were fed and raised quite a bit differently. I had one (which I still have), her name is Aurora, who was born in a 2.5 gallon ariated aquarium. She grew about 2 inches from head to tail very quickly, but didn't get any bigger. Well I moved her into a 10 gallon with two other goldfish about her size and she ballooned to 4 inches, then stopped again. Now she swims happily amongst her friends in an 85 gallon tank and is still growing. She's not the only case either.

I understand that the 10 gallon per goldfish is a great rule to follow, but I believe, with my raising, that 5 is the absolute bare minimum for each goldfish. You all feel perfectly free to do as you wish with your own fishies, but I wanted to state my doings.
