Hi.
Yesterday I treated my tank to a new log cave for my aquarium.
I bought it from pets at home...
Took it home, washed it, and put it in my tank.
All is well apart from the fact the tank water STINKS. It has a resin type smell.

Any ideas on if this will A. Harm my fish and B. anything I can do to stop it?

Thanks :)

If you bought it from pets at home and it said it was for the fish tank. It should be fine.

Hi. I've done 2 water changes and it still smells :(
I'm sure it will be fine but the water really does stink!!!!

One thing I always do when there is a smell in the aquarium is check the filter for fungal growths. The rim of the aquarium, where food and water can mix (in the case of my tank) and stagnate can cause fungal growths here too.

I might be wrong but I think resin can have a similar smell to fungal growths so it could be coming from the ornament.

It is defiantly the ornament. I noticed the smell when i was washing it however I thought nothing of it.
I recently changed the filter media I.e carbon and rinsed the sponge.
The top of the tank was wiped clean on the last water change.

I appreciate the help you are giving me! :)

Well if I were you I'd contact the manufacturer and ask them what the ornament is made of. Once/if they have given you all the material names I would then recommend doing some internet research to determine their suitability in aquariums. I would especially do this as it would appear that something is leaching into the water and creating a smell at a fast rate.

Did you change the carbon before you added the ornament or afterwards?

Personally I would be inclined to remove it from the tank, wash it and return it to P@H airing (pun intended) your concern about the product with a view to getting a refund.
I certainly would not want that product in my tank.

I've emailed the company "blue ribbon pet products"
Ill try taking it back tomorrow and get a replacement or see what they say.
Thanks again guys! Ill keep you updated.

I agree, DJH. That's one reason I've gone with all-natural everything in my tanks.

Watch when refunding it, If it's unfit for tank use you could easily sue the living daylights out of pets at home given you get the right advice about it.

Just removed the offending article out of my tank.
2 of the neons (that I could see) where floating at a 45 degree angle?
I promptly did a 50% water change. The smell was even making me feel dizzy!!!

I have a blue ribbon log in my tank, I wonder if it is the same product, anyway I've seen them in a lot of tanks and most people seem to have no problems with them.  I never noticed any odd smell on mine.  However I did notice that there is a review on Pets at Home claiming that the colour leached out and killed the fish in someone's tank.  Not sure how true that is but might be relevant to you.

This is what is happening with mine. Took it back today and got 3 more ornaments instead ;) all natural rocks and wood:)
Water is fine now I've taken the piece of crud out!!!
