ok ok, i used to keep tropical fish years ago, no problem whatsoever, now decided to keep coldwater fish, just a couple of fantails and shubunkins, i have 2 fluval 1's running in my tank, new gravel, etc, so why do my fish keep getting sick?? one of the fantails currently has black skin spreading from his gill and now its going over his head, and one of the others was ok yesterday and now today his fins are clamped down and so obviously something is not right, my mate who keeps goldfish a few doors down has no problems whatsoever and has tried to help me, and cant see that i am doing anything wrong.

HELP!

Hiya
I have bought water testing kits and both ammonia and nitrite are within safe levels, i have seen my fish flicking themselves against plants, and so have bought medicine to correct it, since treatment, all 3 of my fish have taken to sitting on the bottom of the tank, is that normal? how long should it be before i should see some improvement? Also how do i stop my fish from getting it again, someone told me to chuck all my plants (artificial) and boil the stones, is that right? what about cleaning the filter?

Oh my tank is 2ft x 1 ft x 1ft.

Thanks

What are your nitrAte levels? Goldfish produce mega amounts of waste and need a lot of water volume per fish to dilute it. I suspect your nitrates are skyhigh. That causes stress and makes the fish susceptible to diseases. How frequent and large are your water changes? I've been there, done that, had 2 goldfish in my 20 gal long which is larger than your tank and never could get the nitrates under control even with daily water changes. (My unheated water is not "cold" though, so they were producing waste even faster than normal.) I love goldfish but i'll never keep them again until i have a huge tank with a chiller and can devote 30 gallons per fish.
