exactly mags , its horses for courses at the end of the day to each their own. for me its the colours and the elegance of the discus that attracts me . plus i like the extra challenge involved in maintaining a perfect environment .

discus are great fish to keep I had some 8 inch across fish about 10 yrs ago and they are bolshy fish not far different to big sevs in my opinion

Its going to be the discus I think, just waiting for the guy to pick the piranhas up now then I;ll drain the tank and filter and finally move the big tank where I want it and pain the back and sides blue like my marine

well the piranhas have gone so time to start cleaning it up etc just waiting for heaters to cool down befroe draining it all

I would go for a Pair of Severums, 5-6 Geos (Tapajos or Suris), Oscar and some dithers.

Or a Midas and Jag.

I;ve never liked severums for some reason

I just fancy tetras and stuff for a change and marks pics have certainly tempted me again

if you go discus simonas make sure you get them from a specialist breeder/importer . avoid lfs discus they are usually poor quality. anyway il stop teaching you to suck eggs mate yove had em before so you know what youre doing . im still learning , but even in the couple of months ive been planning the tank ad the 2 days ive actually had the fish , the amount i have learned is amazing :good:

I would say expand on the Clown Loach and Congo Tetra theme, go for a full-on African river biotope!

  • Butterfly fish
  • Alestes Tetra
  • Yellow-tailed Congo Tetra
  • Distichodus species (single as not social?)
  • Bushfish
  • Filter Shrimp
  • Debauwi catfish
  • Lionhead Cichhlid
  • Thomasi Dwarf Cichlid
  • Spiny eel
  • Transvestite Cichlid (? Only reach ~5cm but they are supposed to punch above their weight. Might leave lasting impression on others if everything bought as babies, so as adults they remember this fiesty little fish)
  • Syndontis catfish
  • African Barb
  • Harlequin shark (single specimen, my fave LFS has a tank of these, but not researched them yet... WOULD NEED GOOD COMPATABILITY CHECK, as can be bullies and they grow to ~15cm
  • Knife fish
  • Tilapia
  • etc. etc.

i had an oscar once and i really liked it but i thought a semi community would be better so i sold him on.. needless to say instantly regretted my decision i would say go for a fish that has a brain and interacts with you. thats why i said puffer because from what i have seen on utube they are pretty clever also look amazing and i would love a member on here to have one.

sod the kippers but I;m having sardines for tea on toast wit ha spicy sauce yum yum

I've thought of that Shelagh but don't fancy the amount of money tobuy live rock water etc I;m dead excited all over again lol

yuk! lol
yeah, fair point, it is one hell of an expense.. one day eh :)

I'd either do a SA setup with Sevs, an Oscar and some dithers or have kept the piranhas in the first place  I love RBP, so pretty.

I agree with Minxfishy on the 'wafting fish' discus comment - they don't do it for me either, despite how pretty they are. All I see in lfs though is dull, depressed individuals so it doesn't really inspire me.

I love big cichlids with personality, and S/W for big setups :good:

I like the idea of the african comm tank with clowns and congos but I wouldnt limit your self to 10 of each and thats it, the clowns are going to take a long time to max out, potentially speaking wrong here as I know very little about them but would frontosas fit with these as well?
