Thank you everyone for all the advice! I feel like every fish blog ive perused has contradictory advice on what you should do, and I’ve now learned the hard way you can’t just trust big pet stores. I’ve really felt like I just don’t know what to do but I think I’m on the right track to giving my little guy a healthier life now 
I have a test kit, good bacteria to add to the tank to speed the cycling process, and filter sponge on the way to fix up the tank I’ll do the 70%+ daily changes with a siphon for a week or two, and I’m going to stop the salt for now, and use a higher dose for a small amount of time after I slow down water changes if I think it’s necessary.
