Specifically from Pets At Home - that place is horrible. Some one one here said that they recommend 12 fish in a 22ish liter tank, and they could add 4 more if they wanted. Why on earth would they think that is ok? I just don’t get why their information is so twisted... :(
WHAT!

12 fish?

In a 22l tank - but that's tiny!

I'm not sure I'd even put a single betta into a tank that size, personally.

(Probably tried to sell them 12 silver barbs or something similar as well)

Pets at Home are general pets stores and in all the branches I've been in the fish are tucked away in the back corner. They are run the way each individual manager wants though they still have to go by the worksheets written by head office. Last time I listened in on someone buying fish, they shop worker had to fill in a questionnaire about the customer's tank and they were not allowed to sell more than 6 fish to any customer regardless of how big the tank was, or how mature the tank was.

I think they are getting better. I got a grilling about my tank when I went to get half a dozen neons. (How big was the tank? Was it established? What else was in there? etc)

However they still sell otocinclus singly, and had no clear explanation of what their "fish points" mean or how they are calculated, and recommended more fish than my tank would comfortably hold (though not to the degree mentioned above) so they aren't totally reliable.

It's a good few years since I went near the fish section, though we were in one branch earlier this year getting a few bits for our newly adopted cat. Luckily you can buy feeding bowls and cat litter without asking a member of staff for help ;)

Hah, that’s almost exactly the same experience as me, have not set foot in P@H for quite some time until we got our cat last year and went into the store to get few bits and pieces for our newest member of the family, and could not resist peeking into the fish section, to be honest, I was not particularly impressed so think it will be yet another few years before stepping into this store again to mooch around the fishy section

Sorry to the OP letssetup for slightly hijacking this thread and going off topic.

Already lots and lots of good advice given regarding this tank and cycle so will not add anything as already in very capable hands essjay and some of the other folks who have already answered so far although I saw essjay saying earlier thought your other fish are CPDs, don’t think they are to be honest, but very hard to tell from the pictures and probably very pale zebra danios or similar, it’s the paleness that’s putting me off as to what they exactly are.

Keep up the good work and hopefully you’ll be able to pull your tank back to normal parameters, if you can get some already established media (just a small amount will be fine) or even a handful or two of substrate from someone’s established tank, this may help boost your bacteria colony and help jump start things a bit more.

Exactly. And the fish P@H “recommend” were danios. (Zebra and leopard, which we all know needs quite a large tank)

Ah, my bad, I thought you said CPD.

Yeah, my fault as been out of the fishkeeping game for a while and the old grey cells are starting to wake up to what I’ve forgotten about this great hobby!!

Apologies old chum!

@essjay did you see post 56?
I added some photos of the filter.
Sorry, I missed that. I have just had a look.
Your filter looks very similar to the Maidenhead Aquatics own brand filter that I used to have in my 23 litre tank, mine's just a smaller size. All you need to do is empty the carbon then either leave the hole empty, fill it with a bit more sponge or if you want to use carbon buy a bag of carbon granules and use that to refill the hole, changing it every couple of weeks.
It is ridiculous that they say to change the entire thing every month when all you need to change is the carbon, as does my MA filter instructions.

I have just realised that the MA filters are the same as your filter. I got the box with mine in out of the cupboard and see that it's made by Aquadistri who also make Superfish equipment - no wonder it looks the same, it is the same :)

If you remember, a few posts ago we also talked about the Crystal Clear cartridge - my filter's box mentions that. It says there are 4 things in the filter. The photo shows an orangey lumpy stuff which it says removes nitrate, possibly something similar to API's nitra-zorb; zeolite to remove ammonia (and starve the filter bacteria!); carbon; and alumina to remove silicates and phosphates. You are better off with just sponge.
