Hey William! I've noticed you around and would like to say that you are doing an awsome job with this site. I've never seen anyone who actually cares as much as you! You are doing an awsome job at this and please keep it up, this site is YOU.

ya i got a simple question. i just got my guppie pair about 2 weeks ago, and the female seems to be getting chubby. what r the signs that she's pregnant?

Hi Brendan, sorry for the late reply.

Other than the usual obesity, there are a few more signs.

She may have a larger appetite,
The scales on the front part of her belly will expand and gain new colour(with darker colour scales, the scales are outlined with white from the flesh under the scales)
Also, when very near giving birth, she will go from hyper-active to slow and in the corners more.

Hope i helped you out!
Good luck!! ;)

A gravid spot will show up like this (the black dot bradley was refering to)

It's hard to say, for me and where i live, the money isn't too good.
There is only 1 fishstore in my city and it has only 1gallon sections for different types of fish so they only need about 6 at a time. Other, larger stores however, only expect batches of about 30-50 adults, and they all have to be identicle so, for me right now, the income is only enough to supply food for the fish.
Or should i say, would be too small, now i just keep them for family and me.

right after i read your post, i put my female in a net breeder because she had all the sings you said and when i woke up there were 20 fry. thanks for the help!

Congratulations!! And glad its worked out well for you!! ;) :)

Hi Brad, I have a question or two for you. I have a female guppy and two males. I have had them nearly 6 months I guess. I have always heard guppies breed like rabbits but we have a problem I guess. I bought two females and two males originally both the females got fat as cows so I figured hey they must be pregnant. Well I was wrong one female got sucked up in a filter and croaked, but the other one is fine and still fat. Her gravid spot is not dark. The two males chase her around all the time begging but she just turns her nose up and swims off. Do I need other females to satisfy the guys? Why is she so picky? I had thought the water might be a little cool so I boosted the thermometer to heat the water to around 80 from 76. That made my angelfish spawn but not the guppies. Is she scared of the Angels? I'll look forward to your reply, Ginger

I can't find my post so here it goes again. I have two males and one female. The female seems to just reject them. She is fat but her gravid spot is still light in color. I also have some angel fish, do you think she is holding off because of them?

Alas some fish for genetic reason or as a result of the breeder's practises don't breed. Its always a good idea to select guppies which have a gravid spot when you buy them, the babies will most likely not be high quality but at least you know you're guppy's in good condition and sometimes the babies given through up some real suprises!! :) Welcome to the forum ginger!

Thank you for your welcome William. Yep, I guess she's a dud. I will try to add some more females with big dark gravid spots. Thanks bunches, Ginger

Hi Ginger,

Sorry for the late reply(i see william already helped u out)

Anyway, 1 of the reasons for no fry may be related with the scale. You have 2 males and 1 female, it should be the other way around for breeding. An equal # of males and females is good but 2 females for every male is the best way to go.
