Checked levels tonight...all good...ammonia 0ppm, nitrite 0.25ppm, nitrate 40ppm (will do part water change later...)
Have a slight green haze across tank, visibility v.slightly reduced.... Any ideas....?
Was thinking of getting external filter to "help" internal filter...?

Green haze in the water itself is generally algae known as green water. An inspired name, but descriptive.

Generally it's caused by a mix of too much light, too much nutrient and too much organic waste.

From what you've told us so far you look like you've got too much nitrite and probably too much going through the nitrification pathway.

Ideas for this one include reducing light (most tanks I've seen with green water have sunlight exposure in some way or another), so it would be worth knowing you lighting arrangement/timings, reducing feeding if you're one of the many of us who tends to the generous or getting something in there to reduce the nitrate/NH3 based nutrients. Not sure if you're running a planted tank, but assuming your signature is correct you don't look overstocked. Fast growing stems would outcompete the algae in this way.

You can try options such as UV, but it's an expensive method for this that solves the problem, rather than fixing the cause.

Some people report very good results with placing recently cut willow in the aquarium (a russian approach I believe) that works by drawing out lots of nutrients from the tank. Again a temporary fix, but is reported to work.

Cheers for reply m8.
Tank does not receive any direct sunlight. Have tried to reduce light timings. Was going to get a plug in timer for maybe 8-10 hrs per day. Started off feeding fish twice per day but have reduced to once a day. Would an external filter help algae problem at all...?
