hi,
I had a goldfish in a water feature with a fountain in the garden for a couple of years,
for number of reasons I had to empty the water and I'm not sure what to do with the fish,
is it better to buy a tank and keep it indoors
or we were thinking of letting her go in the nearest duck pond?
she's about 7inch(18cm) long

well at 18 cm i'd reccomend a 100 ltr tank for het at the smallest and perhaps so she can have some company a 150 ltr with 2 other smaller fish from your lfs (should be about 5 cms in size) you'll have to watch that she doesnt become aware of her dominance over the others though. For a filter i'd choose a hagen elite jet flo 100/150 as these have never let me down and have been running without a break for months at a time without failing.

Good luck and remember to upload some photos by uploading them to flickr or photobucket and pasting the link into the post so we can see her!

Yours,
Rob.

100lt? that's a big tank...for 1 fish?
I was considering a 65lt, won't that be enough?

When you think about it she needs enough space to move freely and will also want some company, goldfish are also quite messy and excrete a lot of waste. Also she will soon outgrow the tank and you will have to get a new one so your best bet is to either buy a preformed pond. I reccomed going to this place http://vanhage.co.uk/discover-our-stores/great-amwell and picking up the biggest preformed pond that can fit into your garden and a powerful filter and putting her in there. I did something similar but i dug a pond out myself when i was 10.5 and it is now filled with over 70 fish.

pond in the garden is not an option unfortunately, very small children and stuff
what if I let it go in the duck pond, is that an act of freeing or abandoning it?

as long as the duck pond isn't connected to any streams it should be ok to release her. Small children wouldnt be a problem. i put up a chicken wire fence around my pond and a gate with an alarm to sop my 3 year old brother falling in again!.

what country do you live in btw as i might be able to take her in. I have a tank big enough for her.

again?:) they just can't get enough of water, can they?
throwing anything inside, "fishing", poking with sticks, getting wet all the time...
can't put fence, am renting at the moment and moving soon...
I just don't understand - until now I've only seen "small" aquariums stuffed with 7-8 goldfish
and I really can't wrap my mind around the idea that a single goldfish needs at least 100l tank..

100 Litres isn't sufficient as I stated in the other thread, releasing non-native species is illegal.
