Well I made a pond last summer and its doing great, the best part is that all my fish were free thanks to kind neighbours. When I got my fish most were about 3-4inches. I had a couple of black ones but they don't seem to be changing colour even though they are 4 inches now.

So really when should I start seeing gold appear?

anther reason for the question was that today I saw the most amazing goldfish ever, he was half black (the tail fin to halfway) and half orange (the head to the center of his body), I had to buy him but (call me ignorant) will he change colour to completely gold?

P.s It wouldn't matter if he did become gold, he's still cute.

Your fish sound really nice, especially the half black. It does sound like he is changing to gold but you never know he may keep some black on him.
I know you can get black koi as i kept one many years ago. :)

1st the goldfish is a dark silver not black, and some gold fish stay like this , what ever they where breed with many years ago, but ye some stay silver and the other go gold :) hope that helps :shifty:

 you can get black (yes black!!), silver, brown, white, yellow, orange and red coloured goldfish.

at 4 inch i would of expected them to change to a lighter colour by now.

not being funny but are you sure they aren't something else?

it could then be grass carp, tench, common carp, mirror carp and maybe koi/ghost koi

lol you could be right, I did have a sneeking suspicion that some of the blacky/brow/silery ones may be wild carp, thier profile from above is a little different, but to be honest unless i caught them and had a look I couldn't tell. As I said earlier I got them from my neibours and they have a HUGE pond!! So many fish so many types  most were wild caught so could be anything

:eek:sama:

If they are indeed Goldfish and no other species it is not uncommon for some of the fry to stay black. Don't forget they originate from the Crucian carp which is a light brown/black colour naturally, so Goldfish of this colour are likely to appear, the Fancy Goldfish strain of Black Moors would have arose from a few Black coloured individuals. :)

Barbels eh? I've gotta check that..... actually secretly I do hope I have two wild carp :D
