I've been reading many spawn journals and a few breeders crossbreed different tail types, like crown tails and half moon delta tails. And as some know, I'm planning on getting nice bettas off aquabid and maybe spawning them, and would be interested to know which tail crosses are beautiful results. Would you please be so kind as to share with me the tail types you bred and what the result was? Or recommend something you would like to see? (Please don't use acronyms, I haven't figured them all out yet ^_^) Or if you're against cross breeding, tell me why. I would like to understand. Also, any suggestions on what I should look into breeding come summer? Thanks in advance.

:) Me too, kinda. I'm reading reading reading, researching researching researching so that I can get into breeding next year (maybe summer?). I have also started gathering up tanks via craigslist (<3 I love cheap/free good tanks.) but yea, genetics is taking a while to get a comprehensive grasp on.

There's this mustard black gas rosetail male on ebay I really want (to breed to a luvmybetta copper HM female) but ;_; I'm not even going to get into breeding until 2007 summer and I shouldn't get any pretty breeding bettas 'til, at the earliest, spring of next year.

But yea, I'm wondering about the tail genetics too...
So if I breed that rosetail male to that HM female (hypothetically, of course), would some of the spawn be a rosetail but maybe fuller long fins? How would the colors work out too? Mustard gas + copper ... more coppery mustard gas?

Well, rosetails basically spread out finnage so you could expect some fuller finnage and maybe some rosetails depending on the rays on your female. Mustard gas + copper should just be a coppery mg but I'm not really sure. That could happen in F2 +. If you really want to cross things like crowntails and deltas, it would take a few generations for anything of nice quality to show up

Our genetics resident expert is Synirr. Genetics is a science and uses mathmatic probabilities. Crossbreeding is complicated. Be best to start with a KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) philosophy. Get Sibling Breeder Quality from a reputable breeder. Once you have a real grasp of the basics with experience, then begin to go into breeding new tail and color types. That's my take on it.

Ahh, I've heard of Synirr. Thanks for the information. Do you have any suggestions of crosses you have experimented (for me to put it roughly) with?

Haeun, your name sounds Korean. (random, I know ^_^) That betta you are planning to buy is GORGEOUS. I love the red tint on the base of his tail, so pretty!~ You should definetly get him.

Thanks for the input! :D

I don't breed Bettas. Too much work, too little time to do it right, too complicated, too expensive for the return, others with excellent credentials and passion are doing it. :p

I alerted Synirr to this thread; if she has time she might stop by.

There aren't many tailtypes you can cross that will give you something impressive right away... DTs with nice full finnage crossed to HMs are good, or HMPK to HM. That's about it, and it's not going to give you anything new and original, just improved HMs.

Acronyms:
HM - Halfmoon (180 degree caudal spread)
CT - Crowntail
DT - Doubletail
PK - Plakat (short-finned)

:) I am Korean.

I love him toooo! But I don't know, I have 20 hrs as of now to think about whether I will really get him.

$25 for the fish alone (that's what the auction is at now anyways; I bet it'll go higher), $5 for transshipping, and then $25-$35 to ship. That's $55-$65. I don't know if I have that kind of money! I am planning to start working at petsmart (hehe, and take better care of their bettas) and I could try to earn some extra money for bettas that way but... Yikes, that's a lot. Especially for a poor college student.

And I don't know if I wil even get to breed him, which would be um, at least 6-8 months down the line?

There will be more fish. I would wait. 8 months is a long time for a Betta. If you work at a pet store, you may be able to order fish and save money.

Haha, awesome that you're Korean. I'm Chinese. :D I was not exactly job hunting, but I have been looking into jobs at places like Petco. (I don't really like Petsmart) They're both pretty close and I could take the bus there. I think I would be pretty happy takng care of the animals there, if I start doing that. Or would I have to start in the back, putting things one shelves and unboxing? I have no idea-I've never had a job before and I don't know how it works. I can start working legally next month, hehe. And when I start working fulltime during the summer, I can get all the betta I want.

Jollysue, if someone worked at Petco or Petsmart, would they be able to order fish?? XD I meant, how would you able to do that, can you tell me please? That sparked interest. :X Would you be able to order betta at a big company like Petco, because I think they would have a constant and consistant shipment of fish, since they're wide-known and stuff.

Can anybody tell me what LFS is? I've been hearing it everywhere, I just know it's local and a store where fish are bought...wait, is it an acronym for local fish shop/store? I think I just figured it out....

Only pet store around here is Petsmart. No Petco, as far as I know. I have been looking for a LFS (yes, it's an acronym for local fish store) around here, but have not been able to locate one yet. Will just have to visit the one back in my hometown when I go up to visit my parents once a month.

As far as ordering fish, I think the manager does that but... :hey: yanno, maybe after working there for some time I can get savvy with the manager and convince them to get fewer but better bettas?

Oh, and as far as that GORGEOUS rosetail copper male goes... I tried to bid. But I lost. Which would probably be a good thing. But... I am depressed nonetheless.
I am getting the copper female, to at least put in a sorority tank, if not eventually to breed.

Grr. I would start building barracks and buying a few more tanks and getting all the supplies if I could just have some damn space. I'm in a dorm room meant for two but actually housing three, so we're cramped as is. If not for the contract, I would've moved out to an apartment or condo or whatnot.
I almost consider taking over the two rooms in our suite though that are designated "nerd boxes" (where you can study in, supposedly). Except my suitemates might kill me.

I'm not sure how much discretion a Petco manager has, but my lfs (local pet store) manager will order fish for their customers. I do not believe they order off Aquabid or anything like that. They have their own contacts and suppliers they deal with. They would have them shipped with their fish, and you would likely save shipping.

When you order from AB or a breeder, they will often send a sibling female for breeding for no extra charge. It depends on the source. Some do some don't, etc. I think for breeding, if I were going to breed Betta for the first time, I would start with siblings of known breeder quality, or at least a recommendation from the breeder. They would know their fishes genetics, what the likely out come of a pairing would be, and could help pick a good combination.

Ahh, I see. There aren't any small lfs here where I live that I think the manager would be able to order specific fish, but I haven't looked. Ever since I was small, when we needed pet supplies, we'd go to Petco or Petsmart, and that's what I grew up knowing. I will check into that, Jollysue, thanks!

I have only the slightest idea of what being holed up in a space meant for two, but with three people, feel like. I mean, students tend to get messy when they need stuff done. And college is college. :( How long do you have to live in that dorm room? I think my mom is going to force me to live in a dorm at least a year, which I am strongly opposed to, since I have a dog that she absolutely hates (and I absolutely love) and I wanted to move out to college with him to an apartment that welcomes pets, not a dorm room where pets aren't alloud.

How many more years of college do you have? If not many, I would wait. I wouldn't want my suitemates to kill me. I mean, they're the people you are temporarily living with, you wouldn't want to do something that annoys them or aggravates them, eh?

I've learned the hard way on eBay--you have to find an auction that has a bid end when you are able to access a computer. At the last minute or two, you bid just higher than the others' maximum bid. :D It's fun when you win, but yes, it is depressing when you loose. I lost a pair of black satin shoes just yesterday when I was bidding. Turns out that person's max bid was higher than mine. That's when you do two minutes, so you can automatically do higher than they have. eBay is like gambling, bad! :X

I can be done in two more years (after this, that is), but the thing is I will probably go to Korea for a year after I graduate so that I can work-intern at Seoul National University's Veterinary School. (SNU, where Snuppy was born! :D I saw him, he's REALLY cute!) And then once I come back after that year, I will be off to vet school.

 So yea. I'm not ever going to be exactly done with school.

But I am thinking of renting an apartment from next year on.

Oh, and about the roommates... They're totally cool! They're like my best friends on campus. :)
In fact, one of my roommates has just gotten into bettas too. :) She got one this Tuesday and she's very excited over it.
Muhaha, we shall see if I'll seduce the other roommate into the betta world too.
