fry count

Hi. Just signed up! How many fry do guppies usually have at any given birth? My female has 3 broods with 10,12 and 9 fry, respectively. Is that alot or no?

Welcome to the forums! As for your question, thats not alot for one batch, but if your female is still young then the numbers will gradually increase. On average all my female gups have around 30 fry per batch every month(28-30days). Also, it could be that your female DID have around 30 fry, but the rest got eaten(parents will eat their young, along with many other fish), sucked up the filter, etc. Having moss, or bushy plants floating by the top of the tank creats places for fry to hide when their born. Or you could try using a breeding trap for next time.

The bigger the females get,the bigger the drops get. My HUGE leopard tail female used to drop 50+ at a time. She was right at 3 inches long.

My female is over 3inches long too but I've never encountered 50 fry from any of my females and I have females who have had over 6 batches of fry, didn't notice numbers increasing...... Guess your male has more sperm, lol

Well, I guess she's pretty young then. I move her out of her tank and into a small tank with an air stone and plants that float and plants on the bottom. I'm pretty sure she doesn't eat them so maybe she just hasn't started her big broods yet.
