Forgot to plug the heater back in!

I usually do tank maintenance on Saturday mornings but this weekend was a bit full on so I've had to do it over the last 2 nights after the kids go to bed. Tonight was a challenge between the 3 year old's tantrums and the 6 month old wanting to breastfeed every 5 flipping minutes.... Laying in bed awake (2am) listening to the baby whinging about how he's pulled his dummy out for the bizillionth time when it suddlenly dawned on me I'd not plugged the heater back in on my guppy tank!! ??‍??‍??‍ I've just run down to do it now, I've not checked what temperature the tank is at, I can't stress about it now I'll have to inspect the damage in the morning... The joys of motherhood ?

I had a heater fail and didnt notice until a couple of days later when I discovered that the fish were very inactive. Checked the thermometer and and sure enough, the heater wasn't working. I installed and plugged in my backup heater and within a day the fish were fine. I didnt lose any fish. The lowest the temp got to was about 68. I set my heaters to about 76 usually.

That happened to me during the winter with my 30g, and my house is cold! The fish were somewhat sluggish comparatively, but fine otherwise.

Thankfully everyone is OK, was worried about the shrimp and the thousands of fry in there but all is well ? phew!

We've all been somewhat conditioned to think that our tropical fish must have 76°F - 78°F constant temperature. In reality, water temperatures in nature, even in the tropics can vary quite a bit. Now extremes in temperature can be very bad, but generally speaking, a dip down to what we'd consider 'room temperature' is likely not going to be a problem for most tropical fish.

It's like when you buy fish online. There are bound to be temperature variations during the shipping time. Yet most fish purchased online do just fine as long as you slowly acclimate them to tank parameters and temperature.
