What are the various causes of flashing and flicking against things in the tank?

Here are the things I know of, or are possible causes:

1) ich
2) overfeeding?
3) other disease?

I just brought home 4 guppies yesterday and one is flashing. Another one is lethargic with slightly clamped fins. None have visible signs of disease. My water params are ammonia 0 nitrite 0 nitrate 7, pH 7.8, temp 76-78 daily.

Yaaargh! WHy can't I ever have a healthy tank?? This is getting really frustrating, I just finished cycling and I thought at last I could have a harmonious tank... I worked so hard yesterday to pick out what looked like healthy fish. I only saw one fish in the tank that looked bad. :-(

don't know how much help I'll be...
but internal parasites?
white or black spot disease?

we need someone wicked experienced to come in here with a cape ;)

about the little lethargic guy with clamped fins...
he might have what your other one does in its earlier stages
or perhaps the temperature isn't warm enough or the tank aeration is poor.
not sure.

Relax :)
You aren't doing anything wrong - most people don't even take the time to cycle their tanks. You're doing a great job! They're probably just stressed out because they got picked up and moved to a new home -that can be stressful on even us big grown up people :)

Scratching on stuff, my first thought is a parasitic infection.
You can try raising the temp and treating for parasites - maybe you can wait around for someone else to come by with better info than I can offer you - I deal mostly w/bettas. :)

Good luck, and take a deep breath - you're definitely a great fishy parent!!

quite true.
I know I almost didn't cycle mine because I was so anxious to get fishies! :p
best of luck. :)

OK, maybe I'll wait for them to display more symptoms. He is eating, perhaps it's just the new water and all.... ;)
